Dear Parents,
As we head towards the holiday, I would like to share an important update regarding the upgrade of our courts. These holidays we are in the early stages of preparing for the replacement of the courts in the Early Years play area. The courts have been damaged, through wear and tear but the major contributor has been the root systems of the three trees in the playground. These roots have grown extensively and damaged the court's surface, posing a potential safety hazard to our students during physical activities.
We have made the decision to remove the three established trees, along with two others that are deemed unsafe during a tree audit. Although this may come as a disappointment to some, we assure you that this decision has been made in the best interests of the entire school community.
After careful assessment and consideration, our Governing Council, in consultation with experts, including arborists and engineers, has unanimously decided that the removal of these trees is essential to ensure the long-term safety and well-being of our students. Although it was a challenging decision to make and not one made lightly, we believe it is important to prioritise the safety of our school community, and we plan to replace these trees with suitable alternatives.
We understand that the loss of these trees may evoke emotional sentiments among students and parents. Trees are an important part of our environment, providing shade and a sense of tranquillity. Hence, we assure you that we are committed to maintaining and enhancing our school's green canopy to mitigate the impact of removing these trees.
To address the broader concern and reinforce our commitment to environmental consciousness, we are excited to introduce the establishment of a Greening Committee. This committee will consist of dedicated staff members, parents, and students who will work together to identify opportunities for; tree planting and re-greening, ensuring the restoration and preservation of a vibrant green landscape across our school grounds. By engaging the entire school community, we aim to encourage environmental stewardship and instil a sense of pride in our green initiatives.
We kindly request your support and involvement in this project as we embark on this journey. We welcome your suggestions, ideas and participation in the Greening Committee, as we believe that collaboration is vital in any successful endeavour. Our first meeting is scheduled for Thursday 3 August with the time to be confirmed. Enzo Bria, LPPS Groundsman and the Year 6 ‘Green Thumb' students are already on board. We are also exploring ways of engaging our early years’ students in the design of the area.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritise the safety of our students and aim to create a sustainable and enriching educational environment. Together, we can enhance not only the physical spaces but also the environmental consciousness within our school.

Library news - Book Week
Monday 21 August-Friday 25 August 2023 Theme 'Read, Grow, Inspire'
During Book Week our students will be able to participate in the following events:
Scholastic Book Fair: Monday 21 August - Friday 25 August.
Students and families will be given opportunities during the week to view and purchase books for sale from Scholastic Australia.
Sustainable Book Trading Day: Monday 21 August.
All students are encouraged to bring in a used book from home (in good condition) to trade within their year levels.
Author/Illustrator Incursion: Tuesday 22 August and Wednesday 23 August.
Reception to Year 3 students.
Year 4 to Year 6 students will have their author visit incursion on the 2 August.
Whole School Buddy Class Picnic: Thursday 24 August.
Book Week Parade and Assembly: Friday 25 August.
All students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character or under the theme of 'Read, Grow, Inspire'.

Student Action Committee (SAC)
To mark the end of their tenure, the Semester One SAC representatives had a celebratory picnic lunch. Thank you to all the ‘Odd Bods’ and ‘Even Stevens’ SAC representatives for demonstrating responsibility and great communication throughout this semester.
Quiet Space
This week, we opened a ‘Quiet Space’ in the Early Years building using money raised on casual clothes day at the end of Term one. The space is designed to support children who may be feeling overwhelmed or overloaded by sensory input from the classroom. It will provide a location to calm their sensory systems and take control of their emotions. After using the space this week, Ariana, from Room 13 exclaimed, "this is so cool."
Casual Day
Today we held an end of Term casual clothes day, with proceeds going to Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Australia. It was fabulous to see so many students wearing blue; the colour of MND internationally. Thank you to everyone who brought in a gold coin donation! As a community, we raised a total of $1,160.

Year 6 Festival Choir
Exciting recording news!
Our Year 6 Festival Choir are busy rehearsing songs for a new CD Peter Combe is putting out later this year.
The album will be called ‘Planet Earth, Third from the Sun’ and the choir will feature in the title track, plus 4 other songs. The recording took place on Monday 3 July at a professional recording studio in Norwood, which will be a fantastic experience for the students. We would like to thank parents Mel Strangio and Anubha & Vishesh Jain for their help and support.
Peter has worked with children at Linden Park PS several times over a number of years, as far back as 1988 when Peter recorded his ‘Newspaper Mama’ album.

Year 2 Choir News
Week 8 was a busy week for the Year 2 Choir. On Wednesday 21 June, the choir held an ‘open rehearsal’ in the school gym for parents to come and see what we do in choir. Children were very excited to show their parents and families what we have been learning. In Year 2 Choir, students have been learning the importance of good posture, warming up the voice, various vocal exercises to produce a nice tone and how to sing in parts. They have also learnt about the solfa scale in music (Do Re Mi). On Wednesday, the children successfully sang a 3-part round, ‘Lil Liza Jane’, a Capella (no backing accompaniment) as a warm up song, followed by ‘Calypso’, ‘Iko Iko’, ‘Fabuloso’ and Pink’s 'Cover Me in Sunshine', which children have learnt in Auslan for the chorus. Unfortunately, Mrs Buttery, who normally team teaches with me, was away sick however, we were lucky enough to have the wonderful and very capable Melissa Newton-Turner (a regular relief teacher at LPPS) step in for her. The open rehearsal was a very successful experience and was enjoyed by the audience. We hope to do it again in the future.
On Friday 23 June, the Year 2 Choir performed two of their songs, ‘Fabuloso’ and ‘Cover Me in Sunshine’ at the Early Years Wellbeing Assembly, led by Jane Angove. Children enjoyed dressing up in bright colours in line with the wellbeing theme and wore Hawaiian lays (flower necklaces) around their necks to create a colourful performance!
Singing in a choir has been proven to lower cortisol levels and relieve stress and tension. Studies have shown that when people sing, endorphins and oxytocin are released by the brain, which in turn lowers stress and anxiety levels (Singup Foundation 2023). Singing also boosts confidence. The release of endorphins gives singers a positive feeling and an energy boost. The act of learning a new skill, improving and being part of a group also helps to influence one's confidence and self-esteem and to feel part of a community. There is plenty more research that supports the notion that singing is beneficial to your mental health, for both children and adults of any age. The Year 2 Choir will continue to run until the end of the term and then students will switch to weekly music lessons in their class groups for the remainder of the year, when they will work on their instrumental skills and other areas of the performing arts.

Year 4 Learning Journey
The LORAX
In Week 9, our Year 4 students performed their "Sharing The Planet" Unit of Inquiry in the form of a Musical called ‘The Lorax’. Students were involved with the planning and operations of this production including script writing, auditions, stage lighting, sound, props, costume design, stage management and of course singing and dancing. Each year 4 class performed their own musical to students and parents in our LPPS Performing Arts Centre. Each show was a success and we are proud of our talented students.

Learning about Literacy Workshop
Thank you to all the parents who braved a cold and dark evening to attend the ‘Learning about Literacy workshop’ on 31 May, as part of the Student Learning Committee’s Q&A on Hay series. Approximately 50 parents attended for a great evening, learning about different ways parents can support their Years 2-6 children at home in the areas of:
- Spelling - including the 4 spelling knowledges
- Writing - with a focus on descriptive writing and sentences structure.
- Reading – particularly regarding inferential comprehension.
The use of the SMART Spelling and functional grammar approaches were also explained with examples given of how these approaches further develop the children’s Literacy skills.

Year 5/6 SAPSASA Girls Netball
Our SAPSASA Netball team played against Highgate PS, Pulteney Grammar School, and Black Forest PS on Tuesday 27 June. The team had been busy preparing for their three matches, training once a week during Term 2 with Miss Low. The team travelled to Highgate PS and played exceptionally well. They won one game very convincingly, scoring over 60 goals. The other two games were extremely close, only losing both games by 5 goals. Miss Low was so proud of the team for their exceptional sportsmanship, resilience and positive attitude. They played some fantastic netball! Well done girls!
Reception-Year 2 Incursion
African Drumming performance
African Beat presented a well-structured, informative and highly interactive drumming performance by one of West Africa’s top cultural troupes. The hands on performance by the artists immersed the students in the rich culture and rhythms of Africa, in an entertaining and educational way.
The students learnt a traditional African song to accompany the drumming rhythm, experience African dancing and be introduced to an array of traditional African instruments of all shapes and sounds, including the talking drum, djembe drum, kpanlogo drum, box drum, bells and shakers.

Congratulations to Akshitha (Room 41-Year 6) who has been selected to sing a solo in the Festival Of Music. Akshitha will sing with our LPPS choir at the Festival Theatre in front of an audience of thousands. Akshitha is feeling excited and we are immensely proud of her.

Congratulations Zachary (Room 27-Year 4) for coming first place in the FSA U9 Foil Competition on 25 June 2023. Zachary has been a member of his Fencing Club since last year and really enjoys the weekly training. Fantastic achievement!

It was two days before Christmas. Harry, Abbey, Peter, and I were building a snowman, when Luke appeared with his little niece Emily, he introduced her and told us that Emily is from the south and has never seen snow before. Luke also told us that she didn’t know much about winter. It turned out that she didn’t know much about Christmas; she also asked who Santa Claus was. Waldo? she asked. Santa Claus I explained brings presents and toys to human children when it’s Christmas. Does he bring presents to animal children also? Emily asked. Well, I said he hasn’t been around this part of the forest for many years. I guess he is too busy visiting the human children to have much time left for animals. Do you think he will come if I write a letter to him? asked Emily. I don’t think so, said Peter. I`ve never seen myself. Neither have I Harry added, shaking his head. You see, Santa is only for human children. Luke said to Emily so forget about the whole idea. Let’s go home now before you catch a cold. Early the next day I saw Emily pulling Luke towards the mailbox. I wrote a letter to Santa Claus, she said, waving a large envelope! Good luck and I asked him to come bring me a present! I shouted. But don`t your hopes up too high, I don’t want you to be disappointed if he doesn’t come. He will- you will see Emily cry. Poor Emily. I thought Christmas Day was tomorrow. She was setting herself up for a very big disappointment. I was sure, suddenly I had an idea. If Emily wanted to see Santa. She would, I decided so I quickly went to town and bought a few things for a surprise. I was very pleased with my idea and could hardly wait to see Emily`s eyes on Christmas morning. The next day I got up very early to get ready. I put on the red Santa Claus suit that I had brought. I looked at myself in the mirror. I was delighted! I put on my boots and tried out a few Ho, Ho, hos. Then off I went, carrying a present for Emily. When I was near Luke’s house. I noticed many other tracks in the snow leading towards his front door. I guessed Luke was having a big Christmas party. It’s strange that I didn’t get an invitation, I thought. But it was Christmas, and Santa was always welcome on a day like that? Then I knocked and I could hear Emily`s footsteps coming to the door. Hi Waldo! Emily cried as she opened the door. I`m so happy you could come too. We were expecting you, please come in. Expecting me? Waldo? How did you know it was me? Didn`t I look like Santa Claus? I didn’t even have time to try out my Ho, Ho, hos but I followed her into the living room. There was Luke, Abbey, and Peter sitting on the sofa and having tea. Each one of them was dressed up as Santa Claus! We didn’t want Emily to be disappointed, Abbey explained. I know I know I said. I thought of the same surprise, Merry Christmas to all of you!!! Soon Emily opened all of her presents. There was a beautiful jacket from Luke, a pair of warm winter pants from Abbey, a wooden cap from Harry, and mittens from Peter. Then Emily opened my gift. Oh, red boots are my favourite colour! she said happily. Let’s all go play outside and play in the snow. I won’t be cold now! she added. Suddenly there was a loud knock on the door. Who could that be? asked Luke. Everybody is here already. We cautiously opened the door. But by the time Luke had opened the door the visitor had already left. We could see the back of his sleigh disappearing behind the snow covered the tops of the trees. Santa Claus shouted at Emily. She pointed to a beautiful red sled hanging from it was a label that read FOR EMILY FROM SANTA CLAUS. I knew he would come! I knew it! cried Emily as she danced around her new sled. This was certainly one of the best Christmas Days we had ever had! Also Emily enjoyed riding on her special sled pulled by five Santa Clauses.

Congratulations to Chinamyi (Room 29-Year 5) for her accomplishments in her Gymnastics for All Intermediate competition. Chinamyi achieved 3 Silver awards for vault, beam and parallel bars, and 2 Gold awards for trampoline and floor. Well done!

Linden Park Auskick centre was a great success with over 60 Auskickers enrolled! All students were highly engaged and continually worked hard on their footy skills. Parent help was amazing which helped everyone improve and have fun. Our 8 weeks was capped off with a nice presentation where everyone got their medals and certificates. I look forward to coming back again soon!
