Kaurna acknowledgement
Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.
Principal's Report
Dear Families,
As Term 3 draws to a close it seems fitting to celebrate some of the exciting work that students have undertaken. Henry Nicholson has introduced STEM concepts to our Year 4 classes assuring high levels of enthusiasm with his hands-on approach. The work of Kara Loan and the Year 4s connects to the 'How we express ourselves' Inquiry, promoting critiquing of Art works. Jasmine has reflected on her expression through her artworks. I would also congratulate all students (and their dedicated educators) on the success of Learning Journeys and Year 6 Exhibition.
Enjoy a well-deserved and relaxing holiday
STEM: 'Battle of The Edisons'
Our Year 4 students are experiencing a taste of coding through their work with Edison Robots. Using pre-set programs, students are giving their robots commands through codes which the students select to undertake missions. Cathy Padfield’s Room 27 were excited to ‘battle’ their robots against each other, using the simple challenge of pushing the opposition out of the arena – very akin to Sumo wrestling.
Attendance Data
A summary of our attendance data looks positive with an average attendance of 93.26% up almost 2% from 2022, however there is still work to be done with our target of 96% and our historical average of 94.5%. In addition, there are still those with patterned attendance e.g habitually late. As a school we acknowledge that there are reasons for lateness but acknowledge those who value the learning routines that our educators have established for the start of each day.
Visual Arts at LPPS
This term the Year 4’s have learnt about the 'Elements of Art' such as line, shape, value, form, texture, colour and space. Students have looked at a broad range of artists that utilise these Art Elements within their works and have been creating their own artworks in response. Towards the end of this unit, students created artworks that reflected the mood of two different songs. Students considered the 'Elements of Art' as they painted, making choices about the types of lines, shapes colours and textures they used to depict the tempo, mood and energy of each the song. Students reflected on their learning and used their art vocabulary to describe their artworks. Students wrote about their choices of warm or cool colours, jagged or smooth lines, tinted and blended colours and smooth or splattered texture used to depict each song.
“We were asked to listen to two different songs while painting and to express the emotions we felt towards each song through our artwork. The first song we listened to was Samuel Barber's 'Adagio for Strings'. The slow tempo of the song had a calming and peaceful effect on me which helped me relax and focus on my painting. To express the mood of the song, I used continuous lines and cool colours such as purple, green, and blue. It was a unique and exciting experience that allowed me to explore my creative abilities.
I enjoyed the second song that was played, which was 'Do your thing' by Basement Jaxx. It had an upbeat and energetic vibe that got me excited. The tempo of the song was pretty loud, which added to the energy. To reflect the mood of the song, I used bright and bold colours like pink, orange, red, and yellow. I also used the splat technique for texture and to capture the energy of the song.” Written reflection ‘Painting to Music’ Jasmine Dandiwal (Room 27).
Below are a selection of Year 4 Artworks. What Elements of Art do you see?

Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) Survey
During Weeks 2-5 (Term 2), all students in Years 4-6 had the opportunity to complete the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection (WEC) survey. This survey is a Department for Education survey that collects valuable data on student wellbeing and engagement within their schools.
The data covers four wellbeing domains, each with corresponding subdomains, including emotional wellbeing, engagement with school, learning readiness, and health and wellbeing out of school.
Key points from our 2023 data:
- An 8% increase in students identifying an important adult at school (56% in 2022, 64% in 2023).
- A 4% decrease in students ability to communicate about their wellbeing (86% in 2022, 82% in 2023).
- A 6% decrease in a sense of school belonging (88% in 2022, 82% in 2023).
Early next term, the Student Wellbeing Leaders will work with Connie from the Department’s Wellbeing and Engagement Collection Team to look at our 2023 WEC data. We will be working with other student leaders in our partnership to begin developing a Wellbeing Action Plan for 2024.
Interoception
Interoception is noticing and responding to our body’s physical and emotional state. Interoception can help us understand our bodies and strategies to help regulate our emotions in a safe way.
Have a go yourself!
Feeling muscles - feet
- Sit down and rest your feet flat on the floor.
- Stretch your toes as wide apart as possible. Hold them like that for 30 seconds.
- Curl your toes under and hold them curled for 30 seconds.
- Rest your feet back flat on the floor.
- Repeat steps 1 - 4, focusing on other parts of your feet or legs.
Where could you feel your muscles when your toes were stretched? Where could you feel it when they were curled?
Casual Day
Today we held an end of term casual clothes day, with proceeds going to Trees for Life.
Maya Zoheir (Room 27) presented the idea to donate to #TeamTrees at a recent Student Action Committee meeting. After some discussion, we decided it would be powerful to donate to a local organisation.
Trees for Life is a South Australian organisation that promotes on-ground actions to protect the environment, revegetating and protecting bushland, farmland and urban terrain.
It was brilliant to see so many students supporting this important cause.
Thanks to everyone who brought in a gold coin donation! As a community, we raised a total of $912.70.

Learning Journeys
Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides many formal and informal reporting opportunities for students to demonstrate how they have developed and applied their knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and learner profile attributes through the inquiries they undertake. Learning Journeys provide an opportunity for parents to experience the PYP in action. As communicators, students are able to verbalise and demonstrate their knowledge on what they have learnt. They lead the journey and share what they have collaborated, investigated, researched, inquired and designed. Last week the Reception students shared their journey and this week the Year 1 and Year 5s completed theirs. The Learning Journeys were held face-to-face in the classroom, where students conversed with family members to explain their thinking.

Festival of Music
On Thursday 14 September 2023, our Senior Choir performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music. I was incredibly proud of our wonderful students; who all performed beautifully.
The Primary Schools Festival of Music has been a custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition for 132 years. It engages our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts.
This year, Paul Jarman was commissioned to compose a set of four songs entitled 'World of Tomorrow'. His songs explore the impact of information technology on our lives. Paul’s songs challenge us to ask, are we living in the moment or through our screens? What is the truth and what is fake news? How can we use information technology to create a better world?
This year Linden Park Primary School had four students selected for leading roles:
Genevieve (Room 29) was the DJ for the song 'I am The Earth'. Genevieve was responsible for mixing and playing the backing music for the choir of 300 students. This was an enormous responsibility and she performed this on stage seamlessly and with confidence.
Akshitha (Room 41) narrated a story through the song 'I am the Earth' and spoke beautifully about our planet from the perspective of a child. Seeing both our students on stage together was a moving experience.
Amelia (Room 40) and Darcy (Room 34) were selected as Choreography Leaders for our concert. They led the choreography for the entire show. Amelia and Darcy are also in our Year 6 Linden Park Primary School Dance Troupe that train twice a week at lunchtimes and choreograph their own dances.
We had a fun dinner break along the Torrens River with the most glorious sunset. Students had a ball laughing and playing with our fun and engaging leadership team Fiona Voigt and Henry Nicholson.
Thank you to our staff Jane Allen and Alice Combe and all the parents who have helped with the choir this year. It was a spectacular event that our students and staff enjoyed being a part of and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Staff vs Students – Volleyball
During lunchtime on Wednesday 27 September, Kathy Wall, PE Teacher organised a Staff vs Students Volleyball match to conclude the Year 6 Volleyball Unit.
Both the students and staff had four teams each and played a round-robin format in the gym. The atmosphere was electric as there were plenty of students in the crowd cheering on their peers as they took on the teachers. It was a very enjoyable time, with plenty of laughs shared amongst all involved.
Thank you to Kathy Wall for organising the event and as the school year progresses, we eagerly anticipate more thrilling sporting battles between our staff and the graduating Year 6 Cohort.

Interschool Chess Finals
On Friday 15 September, Linden Park Primary School displayed its exceptional chess prowess as six LPPS teams participated in the highly anticipated inter-school chess finals. These teams had earned their spots in the finals due to their impressive performances throughout the season.
Each team engaged in four rounds of intense chess battles before the final standings were determined, and the results were remarkable. Linden Park Primary School achieved outstanding success in both the Grade B and Grade C subdivisions:
1. LPPS Maroon B Grade Team: Secured a well-deserved first place with a commanding 13.5 points out of a possible 16 after four rounds of play. Their dominance left the second-place team trailing by a significant margin of 3.5 points.
2. LPPS White B Grade Team: Impressed by clinching the fourth position, a mere half-point behind the third-place finisher.
3. LPPS White C Grade Team: Earned the second place in their division, coming close with just 1.5 points separating them from the championship position.
4. LPPS Silver C Grade Team: Achieved a commendable third place, and their remarkable performance in the final round led to a thrilling turnaround in the standings.
5. LPPS Maroon C Grade Team: Secured the eighth position out of a competitive field of 18 teams.
6. LPPS Grey C Grade Team: Demonstrated their chess skills and secured the 16th position, contributing to the school's overall chess legacy.
What truly made this achievement special was the exceptional teamwork and determination exhibited by all players, including the reserve players. Their unwavering spirit and strong desire to win every game were evident throughout the competition. This remarkable success is a testament to the dedication and hard work that our students invested throughout Terms 2 and 3.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the players who participated, as well as our parent volunteer, Carrie for her continued support throughout the season, which contributed to this outstanding achievement. A resounding shout-out to each and every one of our chess players for their remarkable efforts and sportsmanship.

Adelaide South East District Carnival
On Thursday 21 September 2023 (Week 9, Term 3), Linden Park Primary School had 16 students represent the school at the Adelaide South East District Hotshot Tennis Carnival held at Tennisworld, Millswood.
For many of our students, this event marked their very first opportunity to showcase their skills while proudly donning the Linden Park Primary School colours in a competitive sporting arena.
Throughout the day, our students engaged in spirited competition against counterparts from four other local schools. The format included a series of doubles-matches against these school teams, providing ample opportunities for our young athletes to demonstrate their tennis skills.
The event was more than just a carnival; it was a great experience that encompassed various aspects of sportsmanship and fun. Tennis SA coaches hosted an engaging coaching session to refine the players' techniques and enhance their love for the game. Additionally, a lively Dance Battle Round added a dose of entertainment. The Teacher Round saw educators actively participating, fostering camaraderie between students and staff.
In an impressive display of talent and teamwork, both of our Linden Park Primary teams emerged as undefeated champions in their respective divisions. Such an outstanding performance has earned one of our teams the coveted opportunity to advance to the Tennis SA Hotshots State Final, scheduled for November later this year.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this memorable event. We look forward to cheering on our qualifying team as they embark on the next exciting chapter of their tennis journey at the State Final. Keep swinging for success!

Year 5/6 Primary Schools Carnival
On Wednesday 20 September 2023 (Week 8, Term 3) Linden Park Primary School had 48 students represent the school at the Volleyball SA Primary Schools Carnival at the Lights Community and Sports Centre in Lightsview.
Our school was well represented with an impressive contingent of nine teams, all prepared to battle it out against schools from across the expansive Adelaide Metropolitan area. These students, primarily from Year 5 and 6, had been honing their volleyball skills throughout their PE unit. This carnival served as a fantastic platform for them to exhibit their newfound talents.
The day was marked not only by spirited competition but also by a profound sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Teams rallied together, offering unwavering support to one another and, in some instances, even taking the initiative to coach themselves. It was a testament to the leadership qualities and resilience displayed by every student as they faced off against formidable opponents from various schools.
What truly shone through was the unwavering enthusiasm and passion exhibited by our students. Each team delivered stellar performances that were both commendable and thrilling to watch. However, the ultimate victory belonged to our Year 5 boys' team, who emerged triumphant in their division. Their exceptional achievement has earned them a well-deserved spot in the upcoming Primary Schools Cup, scheduled for early next term.
But the success did not stop there. Linden Park Primary School had more reasons to celebrate, with two of our Year 6 teams securing the first and second positions in the girls' division one competition. Their stellar performance has earned them the privilege of advancing to the finals carnival, where they will have the opportunity to display their skills once more.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this event. As you move forward to the next stage of competition, know that you have the full support and cheers of the entire school community. Keep serving, spiking, and scoring those victories! A special thank you to Kathy Wall (PE Teacher) and to all the parents who volunteered to assist for the carnival.

Everything they practised came together on Wednesday, winning their final basketball game against Parkside Pistons 33–20, one of the best games they’ve played! They looked down the court for the next pass, played strong defence and put up some amazing shots! Well done team.
