The GREAT Scholastic WAREHOUSE SALE!
Kaurna acknowledgement
Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.
Principal's Report
Dear Families,
As the year draws to a close there is still much to be achieved. Staff and students continue to apply themselves to their teaching and learning, events such as Graduation, excursions, swimming are occurring whilst children are completing assessment tasks and staff are writing reports.
Please encourage your children to stay focussed and finish the year with the same commitment as they started, with both learning and their respect towards staff and their peers.
Year 4 Camp – “What are the chances??”
Last week I had the privilege of joining three of the Year 4 classes on camp. One of the most disciplined activities on the camp to El Shaddai is archery. Students become well versed in the safety aspects of handling equipment, persistent in developing their aim and challenged when asked to compete as teams. One of the challenges was to hit a pool noodle worth 100 points from a distance of approximately 15 metres. The odds, we thought were rather slim, but.....
Class Placement and Student Reports
Staff are currently writing reports and organising their 2024 class placements. Students will find out the 2024 class placement on Friday of Week 8 (8 December 2023). As previously mentioned, requests for specific teachers or classes are not entertained as this would create unbalanced learning environments across the school.
Transition Days 2023
Over the last two weeks, we have welcomed most of our new 2024 Reception students for a couple of morning orientation visits. Children have gained an understanding of the layout of our Early Years Building and playground facilities. We look forward to welcoming them all next year.
Our new Year 1 – Year 6 students will be visiting for their Orientation visit at the end of Week 8 during what will be a very busy week as our current Year 6 students visit their new high schools. We are also holding our 2024 class visits on the same day, Friday 8 December 2023.

Assembly Awards
Congratulations to all the students listed below, who demonstrated the Learner Profile Attributes this past fortnight in R-6.

Interoception
Interoception is noticing and responding to our body’s physical and emotional state. Interoception can help us understand our bodies and strategies to help regulate our emotions in a safe way.
Have a go yourself!
Shoulder strength
- Start by grabbing two books.
- Lift your arms up while holding the books in your hand.
- Hold this pose for 30 seconds.
Where did you feel it in your body when we were stretching?
- Repeat the activity again, but this time focus on your shoulders.
How did your shoulders feel while completing that stretch?
‘Tell Helen’ - Commissioner’s Student Voice Postcards
Helen Connolly, South Australia’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, conducts an annual Student Voice Postcard initiative, allowing primary school children a chance to have their voices heard about what matters to them.
This year, 100 students throughout the LPPS community took part in this initiative, sharing their insight into what is important to them, what aspirations they have, what they are most worried about, and what would they change about their lives if they could.
The 2022/2023 Annual Report has just been released. For more information please click link below.

Parent Workshop on Numeracy
Dear Families,
On Tuesday evening, 21 November, I had the pleasure of hosting parents at a Q&A on Hay - Parent Workshop on Numeracy, where we focussed on the importance of place value, as well as discussing how parents can help their children with Maths at home.
Place value
Place value is the second concept in teaching the Big ideas in number. It refers to students’ understanding that ‘10 of these is 1 of those’. Students need to trust the count (the first of the Big ideas in number) and have a strong sense of the numbers 0 to 10 to be able to develop place value understanding.
Place value is the foundation of the base 10 number system. This supports fluency in arithmetic calculations and ongoing learning with larger numbers and decimals.
By the end of Year 2, students need a deep understanding of the place value number naming pattern. This includes:
- Knowing 10 of these is 1 of those
- Being able to work with 2-digit numbers and beyond.
Students who understand place value can:
- Make connections between amounts and a variety of representations
- Count large collections by 2s, 5s and 10s and recognise them as countable units
- Model (using concrete materials), name and record 2-digit numbers; then 3-digit numbers and explain place value to their peers and teacher
- Demonstrate their knowledge of place value by comparing, ordering, counting and renaming when talking about practical everyday problems.
Students need to fully understand place value before you can help them develop multiplicative thinking, which I discussed in Term 2’s Numeracy newsletter (link below).

How you can help your child with Maths at home
If you have a younger child in the Junior Primary: Developing Numeracy skills early gives children an important foundation for their learning and development. It helps prepare them for daily life, including general problem solving and handling money.
Maths includes noticing numbers, shapes, patterns, size, time and measurement. Incorporating maths into everyday experiences is easy and fun. Maths is everywhere – in the playground, at the shops and at home.
Children need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. You may feel the maths your child is doing at school is different from how you were taught, but you can still support your child in many ways. Make connections for your child by explaining how numbers and counting are a part of everyday life.
If you have a child in Year 3 or higher: Providing opportunities to discuss and engage in mathematics supports your child’s learning in and out of school. Your child will also begin to connect the importance of maths with their everyday activities, such as navigating public transport, comparing and choosing the best item to buy in stores, setting a budget, and cooking.
Talk positively about maths so your child also values it. If your experiences in maths at school were less than ideal, avoid making comments like “I was bad at maths at school,” or “I didn’t like maths because it was too hard.” Comments like these can lower your child’s expectations of themselves, and can perpetuate myths about people being naturally bad or good at maths.
Conversely, if you did well at maths in school, avoid jumping in with answers or solutions. Encourage your child to talk about how they might work out maths problems. This helps boost their confidence and deepens their understanding.
Regardless of your own school experiences in maths, be reassured that maths today is not about learning by rote. Today, the focus is on recognising that there are multiple ways to get an answer, and being able to explain how and why you chose the approach you did.
There are many activities you can do at home to help explore maths with your child. When participating in these activities, avoid associating them with speed. Expecting your child to work quickly on maths can cause maths anxiety. Try to focus on the process and not the outcome.

Year 4 - Camp
In Week 5 our Year 4 students attended a school camp at El Shaddai Camping Centre at Wellington.
The camp was part of the ‘Who We Are’ Unit of Inquiry and it was a wonderful opportunity for the students to get to know each other, develop various team building and problem solving skills in an outdoor setting.
School Sport SA – Knockout Tennis
Linden Park Primary School's Tennis Teams Ace First Round of Statewide Schools Competition.
On Friday 17 November, Linden Park Primary School witnessed an impressive display of tennis prowess as our Girls' and Boys' Year 5/6 Knockout Tennis teams took to the courts at the Beaumont Tennis Club for the first round of the Statewide Schools competition.
The Girls' team faced off against Westbourne Park Primary School, delivering an outstanding performance. Chuyi P. and Yifei L. set the tone by securing a 6-2 victory in their doubles match. Elaine W and Kiyara M followed suit with an impressive 6-0 win. The girls maintained their stellar form in the singles matches, each securing comfortable victories. With this exceptional performance, our Girls' team automatically qualified for the State Final, set to take place in a few weeks.
The Boys' team mirrored the success of their counterparts in their matches against Westbourne Park. Rohan D. and Harry J. dominated their doubles match with a convincing 6-0 win. Jeremy X. and Martin K. displayed excellent teamwork, securing victory in their contest. Linden Park continued their winning streak in the singles matches, with all four boys emerging victorious.
Later in the day, as the sun continued to shine brightly, the Boys' team faced Marryatville in their second-round matches. The competition was fierce, with both teams vying for a spot in the State Final. Rohan D. and Harry J. maintained their winning ways in the doubles, while Jeremy X. and Martin K. faced a close match. Despite a setback in the doubles, Linden Park Primary rallied in the singles matches, securing three out of four victories and ultimately finishing with a 4-2 win against Marryatville Primary.
The day concluded with both the Girls' and Boys' teams clinching the top spot in their respective pools, securing a well-deserved place in the State Final of the Knockout Tennis competition. The State Final is scheduled for Friday 1 December at the Seacliff Tennis Club. The students displayed not only their impressive tennis skills but also exemplary teamwork and sportsmanship. As they advance to the State Final in Week 7, we extend our best wishes to both teams for continued success.

School Sport SA – Knockout Cricket
Linden Park Primary finish Top Four in SA!
On Monday 20 November, Linden Park Primary had their preliminary final against Burnside Primary School in the Statewide Cricket Knockout Competition, with the winner guaranteed a birth in the State Final.
In a thrilling and closely contested match, our Year 5/6 cricket team experienced a heartbreak as they lost a nail-biter in the last over. Despite the result, it is important to acknowledge the remarkable achievement of finishing in the top four in the state. The team's dedication, skill, and sportsmanship throughout the season are commendable, and this accomplishment is something they should be incredibly proud of. While the loss may sting, the overall success of the season reflects the team's talent and hard work, setting a strong foundation for their future endeavours as cricketers.
