LPPS Inaugural Fete – an evening to remember!
A fortnight later and families are still talking about the fabulous Fete; whilst the total amount of money raised will be in the vicinity of $17,000, it is the excitement and the goodwill that was generated by bringing our school community together that has made the most impact.
In a time when schools are struggling to partner with families and community, the recent Fete reminds us why it is so necessary to celebrate “Who we are”.
Now we know what is possible; we are collecting feedback about how we might further improve the event, including giving students greater input and responsibility.
Attached are some wonderful photos that commemorate an event to be proud of; congratulations to all those staff, students, parents, ex-students and of course the Governing Council Fundraising Committee.

Traffic Management for LPPS including Durham Avenue Cul de Sac
In 2022, LPPS Governing Council collaborated with Burnside Council, seeking to improve the traffic congestion and risks to our school community during peak traffic times of before and after school.
The outcome has been to remove access to Durham Avenue as a drop-off and collection point. We are asking families not to turn-into Durham Avenue Cul de Sac as the carparks are not available to families. We hope to protect the pedestrian traffic leaving the school via Durham Avenue, by directing students and families to leave safely and access the road crossing. The signage along the road would support using the Northern side of the road (closest to the school) as parking and kiss and drop.
The southern side of the road has No Standing signage during times stated, e.g. 8:00am–9:15am and 3:00pm–4:00pm.
Despite reminders, we would continue to ask families not to perform three-point turns on Highfield Avenue or Hay Road during some of our busiest times; not only is the flow of traffic disrupted but often cars pull up onto the sidewalk when children are not expecting them to.
Thank you for your support in keeping our children safe.
Courts update
With the bitumen being poured on the bottom court we are coming nearer to the end of a very drawn-out project. The completion date is scheduled for next Wednesday, fingers crossed the weather holds!
I have received some feedback and queries about the court surface, eg why have we not used a coloured surface or this surface will radiant the heat, why was it chosen? After considerable research and visits to other schools, the final decision re the surface came down to durability and costing, eg will the finished product last longer than two years? The total cost of the courts’ rejuvenation is in excess of $500,000, any additional costs would have created even greater strain on an already stressed budget period.
There is still work to be done, the Greening Committee is now primed to consider ways to add shade and vegetation to our school environment.

Student Wellbeing Leader’s Conference 2024
It has been a busy two weeks for our Student Wellbeing Leaders!
On Thursday 14 March, the students attended a full day conference at Highgate Primary, with other Student Wellbeing Leaders from schools in the Greenhill South Partnership.
The day included, leadership building activities with the team from Active Ed, learning to analyse and interpret Wellbeing Engagement Collection data and ended with a motivational leadership presentation from our very own Henry Nicholson.
I was immensely proud of the way our students conducted themselves, their participation in all activities and the leadership skills they showed when working together. Well done team!
Areas of Impact Student Forum
This week our Student Wellbeing Leaders attended an online forum which focused on Wellbeing, Learner Agency, Equity and Excellence and Effective Learners.
The forum is a Department for Education initiative where students have an opportunity to provide feedback and ideas in how their learning can be shaped to better meet their needs.
Our students focused on wellbeing and the key areas of belonging and safety, resilience and persistence and cognitive engagement.

Ramadan
Linden Park Primary School is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program school. The philosophy underlying the PYP encompasses global education, intercultural communication and international mindedness. Students make connections to their global community and assume a sense of responsibility towards its members.
The profile of our students is highly diverse, with more than 70 different cultures being represented across the school. The Student Learning and Wellbeing Committee acknowledges this and has made a commitment to ensure that culture is more visible and represented across the school.

Happy Ramadan!
Ramadan is held in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed globally by billions of people, as a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset, prayer, personal reflection and community. It lasts for 29-30 days, depending on the moon cycle.
This year, Ramadan started in the evening on Monday 11 March. It is expected to end on the evening of Tuesday 9 April.
During Ramadan people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while the sun is shining. Once the sun sets, families meet for big meals. People may also have a morning meal before the sun rises.
The month is a time for reflection to focus on family, faith and to be charitable to one another. People donate money and supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat.
After the fasting, comes the feasting. After the last day of fasting, people celebrate with a three-day festival called Eid. During Eid, families and friends gather together to celebrate, indulging in a feast and eating traditional foods only made during this time. Some decorate homes with lights and exchange gifts.

French
Reception - Year 3
Bonjour Parents/Caregivers,
I have had a few requests for information about my French program and ways in which you can support your child’s learning. I thought I would publish it in our Newsletter, so everyone receives consistent information.
Highlighted below are the PYP units of inquiry that my program follows
The strategies utilised in the classroom are numerous songs for focusing on listening skills and improving pronunciation. I read the students simple French stories, and they write and perform conversation roleplays for their speaking practice. We improve our writing skills by labelling, making mini-books or writing simple information reports on the current topic of focus. We learn about French culture by watching short videos on the internet or reading non–fiction books together.
The students only have one lesson a week and I assess everything they do in class. I often ask a question in French of every student during roll call and record the responses using a checklist. I also mark the written work submitted at the end of the day. I collect all their work in a coloured plastic pocket folder, which they take home at the end of the year.
I believe this gives me enough information to make an accurate assessment for the purpose of future planning and evidence for reports. Lessons are also aligned with the Australian Curriculum and the PYP.
I am only able to provide a tiny taste of language learning as it is essentially a daily endeavour. One lesson a week only provides a very basic understanding of the French language and culture.
There are many ways you can help your child to learn more French. There is an abundance of websites and you tube clips on the internet teaching every aspect of the French language. These include Learn French with Alexa, French with Mr Innes and songs by Alain le lait or simple animations like Blabber Beasts. Your child could also try ‘Duolingo for Kids’ then move on to the adult version, both are free.
There are French books for sale at Dillons Bookshop in Norwood and if you become a member of Alliance Francaise (the French language school in Wayville) you would have access to an extensive range of books and films from their library. They also run classes for children or private one to one tuition if you prefer.
Bonne chance!
Cordialement, Madame McCallum

Harmony Day - 21 March 2024
Thank you to all our families who supported our students dressing in orange or clothes that represented their cultural heritage for Harmony Day this year! It was truly breathtaking to see the colours and cultures represented. (Traditionally orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations.)
Harmony Day is a day that we acknowledge and celebrate Australian multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants into our community. At Linden Park Primary school, our educators spoke to all students about inclusivity, respect and belonging for all students, regardless of culture, abilities, disabilities or any other differences. It was wonderful to visit classrooms and see students engaged in conversation or lessons reflecting our school values and the acknowledgement of cultural diversity.
Of course, it is not just Harmony Day when we acknowledge inclusivity and the rich multiculturalism within Australia and Linden Park. Our educators continuously discuss inclusive practises throughout each school day and will often highlight the significance of our first nations Australians to the newest arrivals from around the world.
