5 November 2021 Week 4 Term 4
Principal's Report
COLA Grand opening
The opening of the new COLA has been a much awaited and anticipated celebration. It will be wonderful to see the whole school, special guests including old scholars and staff, gathering together in one place to celebrate the end of the year. The morning will begin with a BBQ followed by the official opening. We will also be congratulating the LPPS Volunteer of the Year at the event as well as enjoying a performance from the Year 2 choir and a special guest!
We hope you are able to attend.
Sports Day
Always much anticipated days on the school calendar, the weather held for the Early Years (Rec-Yr2) sports day last Friday 29th October. In beautiful sunny conditions, we were able to enjoy the Primary Years (Yr3-7) Sports Day today. Both days were a huge success and it was impressive to see the children being so active and supporting their houses.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of our LPPS PE Teachers: Geoff, Kathy & Mack as well as all LPPS staff and the parent volunteers. Congratulations to the winning teams, Waite & Cleland and to all of the students who performed so well on the day. More in the features later in this newsletter.
Transition days 2022
We will soon be welcoming our new 2022 Reception students who will begin their journey with us at Linden Park. Students will be visiting 2022 next week for the first of two visits. Next year we will also be welcoming over 110 new students from year 1 to 6 for whom we have been able to offer a place for as a result of the year 7 to high school transition. Many of these families have been on our enrolment register for some time and it has been wonderful to finally offer them a place in their local school. A small number of students remain on the enrolment register however we hope to be able to clear this by 2023.
Student Free Day: Monday 8 Nov
Monday will be the final Student Free Day for 2021. The purpose of the day is to provide teachers with the opportunity to develop their professional learning and they will be focusing on reviewing recent achievement data and Site Improvement Planning.

Early Years (Rec-Yr 2) Sports Day
On Friday 29th October the Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 students participated in the annual Early Years Sports Day. Through a variety of events reflecting these themes, the students did an excellent job of demonstrating many of the skills they have learned during their PE lessons this year. Events included gymnastics, chicken throw, 3 legged races, parachute, a variety of relays and sprints.
I would like to give a sincere thank you to the fantastic Year 7 student coaches, staff and parent volunteers who assisted throughout the day. A special mention must also go to Simply Fresh on Kensington Road, Erindale for their generous donation of fruit that the students thoroughly enjoyed.

The key attributes of Sports Day (written by Tristan K, Year 6)
Sports Day is all about having fun, participating and working together with your team. Remember, don’t be afraid of doing the activities, have a go and have fun!
FUN: Fun is a big part of Sports Day. Our school believes that having fun will build and develop a growth mindset, skills that your child may have never discovered and happy experiences.
PARTICIPATION: Participation is another key to sports day. All students are encouraged to support and cheer on teammates. If a child isn’t feeling OK about participating, students will cheer on the child and try to make sure their classmates are having fun. Being supportive is a key attribute to Linden Park PS. At Linden Park, if classmates are supportive of each other in a positive way, this will build strength to the students. Every child at school will be supported no matter how shy or confident they are.
TEAMWORK: All students at sports day will work as a team to complete activities to the best of their ability. By showing teamwork skills to each other, this will build those skills throughout class time and in everyday life. By working in your team, you might even make new friends or build new relationships.
Primary Year's Sports Day (Yr3-Yr7)
On Friday 5th November our Year 3-7 students competed in the Primary Years Sports Day. The combination of class tabloid events and championships sprints ensured all students displayed a variety of skills with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.
The always popular teacher versus student events again proved to be crowd pleasers:
- Yr 7 Students versus Teachers recess soccer match was a thrilling win for the students! Final score Yr 7 Students 3 : Teachers 1. Teachers will have a chance to regroup for their Yr 6 Students versus Teachers game on Friday 3rd December.
- Yr 6, Yr 7 and teachers mixed relay sprints bought the action to fever pitch with Yr 7 students tearing ahead to clinch victory over the field. Yr 6 students came in second - both student teams beating the two teacher teams
Our sincere thanks to Simply Fresh at Erindale for the student fruit donations, and to the parent volunteers and LPPS staff that support the program to ensure its success.
The final results which include Term 1 Athletics scores were: Waite (Yellow): 1109, Cleland (Red):1094, Davenport (Blue) : 1043 and Gleeson (Green): 1041. Teams are also given points throughout the day by teachers for displaying excellent sporting attitudes, positivity and willingness to be risk takers. This year the Sportsmanship shield for 2021 was awared to Cleland.

Yr 4 Papermaking incursion
As part of their Unit of Inquiry "Sharing the Planet" and the central idea of sustainability, on Tuesday 2nd November, KESAB came to Linden Park to run a workshop for Year 4 students on recycling, specifically producing your own hand-made recycled paper. Students were highly engaged and were genuinely surprised at how easy it was to create your own recycled paper!
Yr 4 Urrbrae Wetlands excursion
Continuing their sustainability studies, Year 4 students in rooms 28 and 31 visited the Urrbrae Wetlands on Monday 1st November. During their visit students had to identify how wetlands help with the sustainable management of fresh water, and way to improve to processes. Students were able to see what happens to storm water in the wetlands and gained an understanding of why it is important to keep this water clean. Thank you to all our parent volunteers who accompanied us on the day. Rooms 29+30 will be visiting their Wetlands for their excursion on Tuesday 9th November after Monday's student free day.
Library News
It is hard to believe we are already at the end of the year processes in the library. There is so much to celebrate in regards to student reading this year. Year 5 students enjoyed ‘book tastings’ at the Page Turner’s Café last week. Each table was set up with a different genre of books and decorated with placemats, a vase of flowers and a ‘tasting’ menu for students to record their favourite dishes a.k.a. books they sampled. Students chose different tables for each course: entrée, main and dessert. Most students left the café with several books to borrow and bring home to read. Hopefully they shared their books and menu with you.
LPPS is one of the top 55 performing schools for the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year, so we have been invited by Steven Marshall to the PRC reception at the zoo next week. We are allowed to bring one student and 2 staff members to this special event. Students will be getting their PRC medals and certificates on Friday of week 7.
Because we need to collect all books before the end of the year, students with overdue books are no longer able to borrow. Once your child returns all overdue books, they will be allowed to borrow again. Friday of week 6 is the last day for students to borrow and all books are due back by Wednesday of week 7. Students will still be able to borrow 1 book at a time from our Wheelers ebook collection. For more information, visit our library website.
