Dear Parents/Caregivers
Year 1 Phonics Screening 2022-2024
The Year 1 Phonics data screen was introduced six years ago to enable early identification of those students who had not developed a strong understanding of the relationship between sounds, letters and words.
Having a strong foundational understanding of our phonics system is a predictor of reading success as students develop. Students who do not achieve the Standard of Educational Achievement (SEA) are referred for Literacy Intervention e.g. Playberry Laser, Fast Phonics. The 2024 results have shown a decline of 4.6%, after last years’ improvement of 9%. Our 2024 results; of 125 Year 1 students, 108 Year 1 students achieved the expected Standard of Educational Achievement, with 17 requiring additional support. Teachers continue to monitor students' progress using a range of assessments.
‘Where we are in place and time – Throughout History migration changes communities’
Our PYP curriculum is concept driven and our Year 4 learners have been exploring the Concepts of ‘Change’ and ‘Perspective’ relating to the convict colonisation of Australia. Students have incorporated the information they have researched into their reports, including the reasons for being transported to Australia and the conditions the convicts faced. Students have added the perspective of the impact on First Nations people.
The creative ways students have published their learning is captured in the images below.
2024 LPPS Music Gala - A celebration of music and song.
Thursday night the LPPS Instrumental Music students and Year 6 Choir performed at the Burnside Town Hall, creating an atmosphere of energy and joy for their families and teachers. The program started with the angelic voices of the Choir interspersed with the comedic talents of our hosts, Genevieve and Sam.
The Strings ensemble performed moving renditions of 'Dragon Hunter and Joust’ by Meyer with a French Folk song for contrast. The beginner Strings showed few nerves in their debut performances, of Keith Sharps’ ‘Best of Baroque, Campfire Glow and Mary Rocks’.
Our Beginner Band warmed up the audience, with favourites such as Michael Finnegan and London Bridge, bravely allowing their instruments to do the talking. With the upbeat arrangements of Boogie Blues and Boot Scootin’ Barn Dance, our seasoned Continuing Band had the venue swaying and foot tapping.
Demonstrating the skills and dedication shown to perform in front of an audience of over two hundred parents and friends. Thank you for supporting and celebrating your children’s accomplishments.
I would also like to thank the Instrumental Music Team of Margie Hopgood, Peter Matzick, Sarah Butler and Ruth Woerner, along with our own Music Specialists Alice Coombe and Vanessa Buttery. This enthusiastic group giving far more that their roles entail – our gratitude!

Library News
Hi Families,
Our library is missing many library books (mostly novels) from the shelves.
It is very disappointing to see the students go to the shelves to select a chosen book to only find that they are not there.
Unfortunately, it seems that many of the books are being taken out of the library without being borrowed.
Can I ask all families to please look at home and send back to school any books that have our Linden Park Primary School barcode on them.
Thank you,
Russell Hanson, Teacher-Librarian
Book Week | 2025
Little Free Library
Book Week saw our 'Little Free Library' officially opened. Students are encouraged to donate any unwanted books to the 'Little Free Library'. A Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where anyone may take a book or share a book. It functions on the honour system. You do not need to give a book in order to take one. If a book is taken, we ask for another book to be placed in the box if you have one, whenever you can.

LPPS Learning Journeys are fast approaching!
The Learning Journey is a showcase of student learning and provides students with a means to formally share their knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills they have learnt at the end of a Unit of Inquiry. This can connect to curriculum content and the elements of the IB PYP including the central idea, line of inquiry, concepts, learner profile and approaches to learning. Parents are invited to interact with their child’s learning and celebrate their achievements and growth. Students lead the Learning Journey as a way to report on the learning. They focus on real-world skills by verbalising what they know and describe learning experiences they participated in. Students share what they have collaborated, investigated, researched, inquired and designed.
The Learning Journey builds community and home connections as families see not just what students have learnt, but how they learnt it and the progress that was made along the way. The Learning Journey is a great way to prepare students for the PYP Exhibition that they participate in during their last year at school. They gain a sense of confidence that will stay with them throughout their lives. They discover the joys of learning, and understand that curiosity is the key to becoming a life-long learner.
We will begin each Learning Journey in the gymnasium for a short overview of the Unit of Inquiry, presented by Nicole our Deputy Principal. Parents will then migrate into their child’s classroom where student work, presentations, and displays will be awaiting for visitors to discuss with their child.
Please meet at 9:00am in the gymnasium on the day allocated below.

Learning Journeys | Year 2
Learning in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides opportunities for students to demonstrate how they have developed and applied their knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and learner profile attributes through the inquiries they undertake. Learning Journeys provide an opportunity for parents to experience the PYP in action. As communicators, students are able to verbalise and demonstrate their knowledge on what they have learnt. They lead the journey and share what they have collaborated, investigated, researched, inquired and designed. This week on Wednesday the Year 2 students shared their journey about their unit on “How we express ourselves”. The central idea of the unit was; “People communicate through different art forms”. Students inquired into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; and the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity, and our appreciation of the aesthetic.

International Day of Peace
International Day of Peace is celebrated on 21 September. This day offers us all an opportunity to pause and consider how we can contribute to a more peaceful world, both within our school community and beyond. This year’s theme is ‘Cultivating a Culture of Peace’.
What is the International Day of Peace?
Established by the United Nations in 1981, the International Day of Peace is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations. It serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to foster environments where kindness, respect, and understanding flourish. Whether it’s peace within ourselves, peace in our homes, or peace on a global scale, this day invites us all to be intentional in our efforts to promote harmony.
Embracing Peace at School
At our school, we strive to build a community where every student feels safe, respected, and valued. Peace starts with how we treat one another, and we emphasise the importance of kindness, empathy, and inclusion in everything we do. The Learner Profile attribute of ‘Caring’ is explicitly taught in our units of inquiry across the year levels. We want our students to know that to be caring is something that they can practice every day- through their words, actions and attitudes.
A Global Perspective
This year’s International Day of Peace theme is "Cultivating a Culture of Peace," which highlights the role each of us can play in promoting a culture of peace. We will be encouraging our students to think about how they can contribute to a peaceful and sustainable future, whether that’s through environmental stewardship, supporting a cause, or simply showing kindness to someone who needs it.
What Does “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” Mean?
At its core, this theme calls on us to actively nurture environments where peace can thrive. It’s not just about the absence of conflict—it’s about promoting understanding, compassion, and collaboration in everything we do. Whether that’s in the classroom, on the playground, or at home, peace begins with the choices we make each day.
How Families Can Support
Families play a vital role in promoting peace. I encourage you to have conversations at home about what peace means to you and how your family can "cultivate" it in your everyday lives. You might consider reading a book about peace, practicing mindfulness together, or discussing how we can be peacemakers in our relationships and community.
Looking Forward
As we recognise this day, let’s commit to making peace not just a momentary goal, but a lasting part of our school culture. It starts with us—students, staff, and families—working together to make our school a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. We are excited to see the impact our school community can make in fostering peace both here and in the wider world.
In peace and partnership,
Nicole Scrivener, Deputy Principal: Innovation and Inquiry
Wellbeing News
Today I spoke at the early year’s assembly about the need for students to wear hats during play times. As we approach summer the UV index increases. Whilst ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is important for health. Too much of the sun’s UV radiation can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. Our school has a responsibility to protect students from the sun, hence the need for students to wear hats.
A copy of our Skin Protection and Inclement Weather Policy can be found in the link below:
A reminder that at the end of Term we will be holding a Pyjama Day. Gold coin donations will support Back Packs 4 Kids SA. This is an important charity which helps disadvantaged children right across South Australia.
So far this year I have been able to assist lots of parents and students with issues which arise at school. If your child is experiencing any social or emotional difficulties please feel free to make a time to have a chat. I encourage parents to also talk to your child’s class teacher as many problems can be solved when we are made aware.
Whilst we are on the subject of being sun smart. Did you know?
Skin should be protected when the UV radiation level is 3 and above.
Protect your skin in five ways 'Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide'.
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Every year, over 2,000 Australians die from this almost entirely preventable disease.
Fortunately, being SunSmart is a simple and effective way to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.
When UV levels reach three and above, it is recommended that you protect your skin in five ways for maximum protection — Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide:
- Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible; it’s one of the best barriers between your skin and the sun.
- Slop on a SPF 50 or 50+, broad spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply regularly.
- Slap on a hat that provides protection to your face, neck and ears.
- Seek shade when outdoors. Staying under a tree and umbrella can reduce your overall exposure to UV radiation.
- Slide on some sunglasses that are close fitting, wraparound and cover as much of the eye area as possible.

Year 5/6 Primary Schools Carnival
On Friday 30 August (Week 6, Term 3) Linden Park Primary School had 36 students represent the school at the Volleyball SA Primary Schools Carnival at the Marion Leisure & Fitness Centre.
Our school was well represented with an impressive contingent of 7 teams, all prepared to battle it out against schools from across the expansive Adelaide Metropolitan and Fleurieu Peninsula. These students, primarily from Year 5 and 6, had been honing their volleyball skills throughout their PE unit. This carnival served as a fantastic platform for them to exhibit their newfound talents.
The day was marked not only by spirited competition but also by a profound sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Teams rallied together, offering unwavering support to one another and, in some instances, even took the initiative to coach themselves. It was a testament to the leadership qualities and resilience displayed by every student as they faced off against formidable opponents from various schools.
What truly shone through was the incredible enthusiasm and passion exhibited by our students. Each team delivered stellar performances that were both commendable and thrilling to watch. The ultimate victory belonged to our Year 5 girls' team, who emerged triumphant in their division. Their exceptional achievement has earned them a well-deserved spot in the upcoming Primary Schools Cup, scheduled for Week 9.
But the success did not stop there. Linden Park Primary School had more reasons to celebrate, with one of the Year 6 girls teams securing second positions in their division. Their stellar performance has earned them the privilege of advancing to the finals carnival, where they will have the opportunity to display their skills once more.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this event. As you move forward to the next stage of competition, know that you have the full support and cheers of the entire school community. Keep serving, spiking, and scoring those victories! A special thank you to all the parents who volunteered to assist for the carnival.

SAPSASA District Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday 4 September, the Adelaide South East District Athletics day was held at SA Athletics Stadium, Mile End. We took a team of 35 Years 4-6 students to compete in various track and field events. On a beautiful day for athletics, we had some wonderful results across all ages and events. The students had a great time being able to put their skills on show against other school participants and had a wonderful time mixing amongst the other competitors.
The students had been working extremely hard over the course of the Term 3, arriving at school at 8:00am to practise their skills on some cold and frosty mornings. The relay teams gave up multiple recesses and lunches to work on their baton change-overs. Students’ had been working tirelessly on their communication and smooth exchanges and it was time to put it all together on the biggest stage. There was some outstanding competition but in spite of this, Linden Park students were able to achieve an excellent result overall.
Linden Park Primary’s Athletics Team finished in first place overall out of 15 competing schools, scoring 32 field points and 27 track points for a total of 59 points.
A huge thanks to all the parent volunteers for assisting with supervising the students on the bus and volunteering at the events, and to all of the families who made a huge commitment to bringing the students out to trainings and gave them the best possible opportunity of performing their best.
Another huge acknowledgement to our students for the excellent behaviour and conduct during the day. They certainly competed and acted in the appropriate way for a major sporting event including acknowledging other participants at the end of their events. The amount of support they had for everyone in the team during each other’s events was outstanding.
A final special shout out goes to Oliver D, Emily B, Elina Y, Murphy P, Harris K, Eddie R, Jayden N, Gianluca Z, Elaine W & Leo S who have all been selected for the Adelaide South East District team to compete on Tuesday 17 September at the State Carnival.

Linden Park Maroon ties in Grand Final
Linden Park Primary School's Maroon A Grade Chess Team has achieved an outstanding result, tying in the Interschool Chess Primary School Grand Final and capping off a remarkable season.
Throughout Terms 2 and 3, our dedicated students competed in fortnightly matches against various schools across Adelaide, demonstrating exceptional strategic skills and determination. In a thrilling grand final, the LPPS Maroon A Grade Team battled to a draw against East Marden Primary School, a four-time champion of the A Grade competition. Every one of our players gave it their all, delivering fantastic performances.
Now, we eagerly await the decision of the league president on whether there will be a rapid or blitz playoff or another tiebreak rule to determine the winner in the coming weeks.
A huge congratulations to the incredible members of the team: Cindy C, Charlotte C, Oliver T, and Lucas Z. Their dedication, sharp strategic judgment, and excellent sportsmanship were key to Linden Park Primary School's success in the SA Junior Interschool Chess League. We are proud of their efforts and await the final decision with excitement!
Linden Park Primary School also wishes the best of luck to our B Grade Chess Team as they prepare for their grand final on Friday 13 September at St Peter's College. We know they will bring the same level of focus, skill, and teamwork that has led them to this point. Go LPPS!

Tri Skills | Years 5/6
In Term three, all Year 5/6 students have been taking part in Tri Skills as part of the movement composition section of PYP Physical Education. Gymnastics is part of our Years 5/6 PE program and for the delivery of this, we draw on the expertise of Tri Skills. Their involvement makes the specialist sport of gymnastics, fun, safe and exciting. Tri Skills’ highly skilled and experienced coaches use modified equipment and carefully structured, progressive lessons to ensure all children are provided with the opportunity to achieve the key learning objectives described in the Australian Curriculum.
The experiences in this program have been classified into the Dominant Movement patterns to provide a sequential framework for teaching gymnastics: Statics, Landing, Spring, Rotation Swing and Locomotion. Tri Skills brings an extensive range of high quality matting, soft vaults, mini tramps, beam, bars, springboards and wedges all of which cannot be provided by individual schools, but are invaluable in delivering the program. All students will be working on an assessment piece for PE marks in this time.

By Chuyi Peng | Year 6 .......
On Friday 30 August, four enthusiastic teams from Linden Park set out for the Houghton Table Tennis and Sports Club to participate in the highly anticipated state SAPSASA table tennis championships. Our school was represented by three boys' teams and one girls' team. The girls' team delivered an outstanding performance, securing an overwhelming victory by losing only one set throughout all their matches — a truly impressive feat!
Because the girls finished their matches ahead of schedule, many of the Linden Park girls got the chance to learn how to umpire a table tennis match, helping out with the boys and in other areas they may have been needed.
Throughout the day, the teams experienced a busy schedule, with matches lined up one after another. They had only one brief break to grab some food and rest between their intense games. Despite the relentless pace, the dedication and skill displayed by all the players were remarkable, showing that even as their situation did not look fully advantageous, they still persevered, not for results, but for enjoyment.
By the end of the day, everybody was thoroughly exhausted, with the boys even playing eight rounds of six matches! Even though not all of the Linden Park teams were physically successful, they all had a chance to have fun and just play table tennis.
Reminder | Hats
This is an important reminder for all students to have a hat packed for school every day!
As part of our LPPS uniform code; all students at Linden Park Primary School must wear a maroon broad-brimmed, bucket, or legionnaire's style hat during outdoor school activities from 1 September 2024 to 30 April 2025.
Compliance with this policy is essential for protecting our students from harmful sun exposure.
