Kaurna Acknowledgement

Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.

Principal's Report

Dear parents, families and students,

On the back of last Friday's student-free day I took the opportunity to speak with focus groups of students in middle primary, asking them to provide feedback about our Wellbeing focus.
Students were able to confidently articulate the focus of their learning but also identify strategies that they had developed whilst exploring concepts such as Friendships and emotional literacies.
When students have a deeper understanding of Healthy friendships, they understand how their choices contribute. Knowing that friendships aren't perfect and trust and respect are critical ingredients enables students to navigate relationships with understanding. They have an understanding of their emotions and how these impact their responses.

Students in Room 25 shared their Journals where they record their reflections about Wellbeing, including definitions of friendships, health and non-healthy friendships.

Room 22 gave a clear understanding of Healthy and non-healthy friendships; confidently describing what a friendship fire is. A friendship fire is a situation between yourself and a friend that results in negative and hurt feelings.
They gave examples and explained some strategies for putting the fire out.
Oliver explained, "A friendship fire is when you agree with something and your friend agrees with something else and then you begin to fight about it"
Hazel contributed two examples, "Where someone says something is a joke but a friend thinks you've said it actually" and "When a friend doesn't want to play with you for a day and they get mad at you."
Riaan gave the example of a child who accidentally hits a friend and then they think its on purpose so they start to fight.
Strategies to put out the friendship fire included:
Asking a trusted adult for help, taking a breath to calm down, going back to your friend and talking it through until you become bros again.

Some of the understanding that students are developing will hold them in good stead for all aspects of life, now and future; work, family and friends!

Kind regards,
Fiona Voigt, Principal

Casual Clothes Day
The last day of this term will again be a Casual Clothes Day. Students brought lots of ideas for Casual Clothes day themes. The idea with the most votes was Pyjama Day.
On the last day of term students are invited to dress up in their pyjamas, dressing gowns, onesies and Oodies. The money raised through gold coin donations will go towards improving the areas on the ovals where soccer is played.

Refugee Week
This week is Refugee Week and students have had the opportunity to learn more about refugees.
Students engaged in classroom activities, explored resources from the Refugee Council of Australia and were able to watch a Behind the News TV report which explained some of the reason why people become refugees and the amazing contribution they bring to our community and country.

Kind regards,
David Molloy, Student Wellbeing Leader and Autism Inclusion Teacher

DID YOU KNOW?

Since of the end of World War II, Australia has welcomed nearly 1 million refugees and others in humanitarian need.
Worldwide in 2023, 110 million people were forcibly displaced as a result of conflict or persecution.
62.5 million were displaced within their own countries
36.4 million were recognised as refugees awaiting resettlement
6.1 million were seeking asylum in another country.
In 2023, Australia resettled 15,223 refugees.
We are so fortunate to live in a country free from persecution, where the human rights of our citizens are observed, and where people can feel safe to live in peace.
We are also incredibly fortunate that the people who choose to make Australia home, add to the cultural diversity of our country and enrich the lives of all Australians.

Student Play it Safe - and Score Big!

Over Weeks 7 and 8, our schoolwide focus turned to our final Yard Expectation: Be Safe.

Students were encouraged to demonstrate safe behaviours in the yard, including walking on paths, playing by the rules, using equipment appropriately, wearing hats in the sun, keeping hands and feet to themselves and seeking adult support if something was unsafe. Yard duty teachers were on the lookout, awarding green dots to students who made responsible, safe choices during playtime.

Each green dot helped to fill our ‘Be Safe’ shooting star target and once again, our students rose to the challenge. With the star covered, the whole school earned a 10-minute bonus playtime, which took place on Thursday this week.

As part of the celebration, students gathered on the COLA courts for the much-hyped lunchtime netball match. Originally set as a Staff vs Students showdown, an unfortunate run of staff injuries saw the game pivot to a fast-paced Girls vs Boys match, featuring our SAPSASA netballers, student all-stars and a few still-able-bodied teachers.

Fiona and I took on umpiring duties and were treated to a high-energy game filled with impressive skill, teamwork and moments of true sportsmanship. The crowd was fully engaged, cheering as players intercepted, passed and scored with flair, often throwing themselves into the action (and occasionally across the court) in their determination to win.  Thankfully, our players know how to 'Be Safe’ and avoided any injuries.

In the end, the girls’ team claimed victory with a 10–6 win, but the real success was the way the event brought students and staff together, celebrating our ‘Be Safe’ focus and highlighting the spirit of fun, fair play and connection that makes Linden Park Primary such a great place to be.

Special thanks to Harry Slee for organising the student teams, our Year 5 scorers, our amazing netballers and the brave staff who stepped onto the court—Katelyn Link, Josh McGuire, Henry Nicholson and Aidan Delaney. Fiona was so impressed; she’s already talking about making it an annual tradition!

Here’s to keeping each other safe, and having fun while we do it! 🏆

Heidi Rohrig, Deputy Principal: Inclusion

Library News

Term 3 will see our annual Book Week celebrations, during which the students will be participating in a sustainable book swap.

Students will be asked to bring to school an old book (in good condition) to swap with another student in their classroom/year level for the sustainable book swap.

If you plan to sort through your child's books during the school holidays, please retain some books for your child to bring for the book swap.

Music News

Last Tuesday 10th June, the Year 2 Choir performed a small concert to parents and friends in the LPPS gym. Each week in Terms 1 and 2, the Year 2s have a choir rehearsal altogether in the PAC, where they learn vocal techniques, fun warm ups, learn about singing posture and tone how to hold their part in a round or in harmony. With 130 voices, they make a great sound when they are altogether!
In the performance they showed families their weekly warm up with 'Warm the Brain' and an Aussie round 'Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gumtree' where they were able to sing in 3 parts without accompaniment! They also showed off their knowledge of 'Solfa' in the well-loved classic 'Do Re Mi' from 'The Sound of Music'. Solfa is a universal musical language created by Zoltan Kodaly which became famous across the world through The Sound of Music. The choir has learnt some songs in First Nations languages this semester and sang 'Inanay' in the performance, an Aboriginal lullaby in the Yorta Yorta language of Northeast Victoria. They finished with 'Sing Together' and Owl City's 'Fireflies'.
Thank you to all those who came along to support their children on the day. We loved having you there!

Alice Combe, Music Teacher and the Year 2 Team

School Sport SA - Year 5/6 Boys Statewide Knockout Soccer

On Wednesday 11th June, Linden Park Primary School proudly competed in the School Sport SA Statewide Year 5/6 Boys' Soccer Carnival, held at Barrett Reserve, West Beach, during Week 7 of Term 2.
Following a series of trials and training sessions, 14 talented players were selected to represent our school in this highly anticipated event. The day was packed with energy and enthusiasm as the team took to the field for five matches against a range of strong primary school opponents from across Adelaide.
Our boys played with great determination and teamwork, competing admirably in every game.
A big thank you to all the students for their efforts and commitment. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the parents who volunteered to assist with transport - your support made this opportunity possible.
