Principal's Report
Goal setting in Room 6:
After such an unusual start to the year, I had the privilege of visiting Room 6 in time to celebrate some of the children’s reading progress thus far.
One of the success criteria of our Site Improvement Plan is for individual children to engage in self-assessment and personal goal setting. During my visit, the children were able to discuss their learning progress in reading and set new goals with specific strategies. As a result, the goals set are both clear and targeted, designed to empower learners to focus on their next steps in learning to improve.
Children spoke with confidence about their goals, with Charlotte being able to explain what her new goal meant.
Water Babies – Swimming with Room 8
Last Monday, I had fun accompanying Ms Millan’s class and three wonderful parent volunteers to the Burnside pool for their Water Safety lessons. Despite the cooler weather, the children were all enthusiastic and engaged in learning the foundation skills of swimming and water safety. The students built on previous skills in small groups; practising their kicking skills, floating and confidence in having their faces underwater.
I would like to offer heartfelt thanks to all of those parents who supported the children by volunteering. Our SSOs (School Services Officers) filled the gaps where we didn’t have enough parents which created significant stress on Intervention and support programs.
NAPLAN 2022
A reminder that the 2022 Literacy and Numeracy tests will be held during weeks 2 and 3 of Term 2, the 10 -20 May. Students from Year 3 and Year 5 will sit tests in Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, Reading and Numeracy. The test results provides us with valuable information of individual student growth over time and also help us to measure the effectiveness of our teaching and learning programmes. This year students will move from paper-based tests to online computer-based testing. Online testing brings many benefits and opportunities including providing better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. All students are encouraged to sit the tests however if you have any concerns, please see your child’s teacher in the first instance. More information click on NAPLAN Online
Previous test papers and answers can be located on the ACARA website if you wish to have a better understanding of how the tests are composed. An example of a Year 5 Numeracy question is below.
OSHC Acknowledgement
Congratulations to Nicole Ninos and the team at Linden Park Primary School Out of School Hours Care (LPPS OSHC) who were recognised for the wonderful program and care they provide our community. The following extract was published in the Advertiser earlier this year.
'Independent analyst app KindiCare has rated childcare centres across the country based on government audits and family feedback, giving each facility a rating out of 10.'
The centres are also ranked as excellent, very good, good or fair.
LPPS OSHC was ranked 8.95 - very good.
Early Dismissal: End of term 1
A reminder that school finishes at 2:10pm on the Easter Thursday in readiness for the school holidays.
LPPS OSHC will be open from 2:10pm. Children with regular Thursday afternoon bookings will commence OSHC at the earlier start time. If your children does not normally attend OSHC on Thursday afternoons and you need them to attend – please book them in using the My Lounge app. All children must be enrolled in the service prior to this day. Regular after school care fees apply, subsidy will be deducted as per eligibility.

End of term 1: 14 April - Casual clothes day
The Year 4 'Even Stevens' Student Action Committee (SAC) group spent time researching and discussing which charity the LPPS students should donate money to for casual clothes day at the end of this term. The 'Odd Bods' SAC group decided we should donate to a charity that supports families in NSW and Queensland after the floods.
We have decided that the best charity to donate to is the Savation Army Flood Appeal.
https://www.salvationarmy.org.au/donate/make-a-donation/donate-online/?appeal=2022floodappealhp
- Donation: Gold Coin to your classroom teacher
- Clothes: Appropriate casual clothes
Thank you, Sam S. & Caitin T. (on behalf of the Even Stevens SAC group)
Last day of Term 1 - Reminder
On the last day of Term 1, Thursday, 14 April, school will finish early @ 2.10pm.
Student Portfolios
The PYP portfolio is one way we monitor, document and report on student progress to parents. Other ways include the Learning Journey or Exhibition, written reports and the student led conference. The learning portfolio is shared with parents at the end of every term.
A portfolio is a record of students’ involvement in learning which is designed to demonstrate;
- success
- growth
- higher order thinking
- creativity
- assessment strategies
- reflection
- progress of learning against personal learning goals and success criteria
- feedback to feed forward for next steps of learning
Portfolios demonstrate both the process and the product of learning in the units of inquiry. It is more than just a collection tasks to be completed at the end of a unit as a formal ‘finished product’. It is an ongoing working document that communicates students’ thinking, understanding and their journey of inquiry. Work samples are chosen by teachers and students to demonstrate learning both during and at the conclusion of the units of inquiry. Students participate in the portfolio creation, encouraging voice and choice in the process. The portfolio enables students to reflect with teachers, parents and peers to identify their strengths, growth and areas for improvement.
Portfolios may contain many different examples of learning including;
- photos
- work samples
- certificates
- assessments of prior knowledge
- self-assessments
- end of unit assessments
- rubrics
- checklists
- reflections
Documentation of a portfolio can be physical (folder or book form) or digital (online sharing tools such as SeeSaw), and can be displayed or recorded in a variety of media forms. Portfolios help to make learning visible and apparent.
The aim of the portfolio provides an opportunity for parent and child to talk and share about the learning journey. Parents are encouraged to provide feedback and document comments or thoughts in the portfolios. Keep a look out for your child’s portfolio coming home soon!

Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
Linden Park Primary School would like to invite you to join our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group. We are looking for members of the community to establish a diverse working group that ensures the responsibility of implementing reconciliation.
What is a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)?
The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) provides a framework for Linden Park Primary School to support the national reconciliation movement. We have developed our RAP through Narragunnawali. Narragunnawali supports all schools and early learning services in Australia to foster a higher level of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.
The RAP framework enables us to contribute to reconciliation by:
- building and encouraging relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, organisations, and the broader Australian community
- fostering and embedding respect for the world’s longest surviving cultures and communities.
- develop opportunities within our community to improve socio-economic outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
Anyone can join our RAP working group. If you are interested, please email Nicole Scrivener with your interest at Nicole.scrivener83@schools.sa.edu.au.
We will then organise a day and time to have our first meeting. Reconciliation is everyone’s business. We hope to hear from you soon.
Nicole Scrivener, Deputy Principal
Cupcake Stall
Thank you to the school community for your generous contributions to our Cupcake Stall. We received so many delicious items to sell which helped raise $3,100!
It is certainly a much loved event of the students, plus our wonderful, hardworking teachers were able to sample some of the remaining treats for afternoon tea.
LPPS Governing Council will make a decision about the allocation of the funds raised at their next meeting.
A big ‘Thank You’ to all of our volunteers for the day.
Brooke & Mel, Community & Fundraising CommitteeLibrary news
During 2021 the students and staff at our school undertook a library survey. Everyone gave honest and valuable feedback which the library staff have taken onboard.
One of the new initiatives based on the survey results will be 'Quiet Tuesdays'. Many students requested that they be able to use the library for quiet reading, 'chilling out' and relaxing in a peaceful space. Lunchtime on Tuesdays in the library will now be dedicated to quiet activities such as quiet reading, colouring and jigsaw puzzles. We anticipate this to be quite popular!
Many students also indicated that they would like to continue book talks with a teacher librarian (TL). During this time the TL introduces new books, series, genres and a variety of authors. 82% of surveyed students find book talks helpful for finding what to read next. As a result of this information, we will continue with book talks this year.
Another initiative that we will trial this year is student led, teacher librarian facilitated book clubs at lunch. We were intending to start this term but due to Covid, the library has not been open during lunch this term. We are hoping to begin book club next term. Over 50% of students expressed some interest in participating in a lunch time book club.
