LPPS School Tours
As COVID 19 restrictions lift we have been fortunate to re-engage in our school tours. The tours are designed to provide families, who are looking to enrol for Reception 2023, with information about our school and community.
We start the session with a short presentation that captures what makes LPPS such a wonderful educational community. Our Yr 6 school ambassadors then lead small groups of families on a tour sharing their insights as to what being a student at LPPS looks like from Reception to Year 6 – who better to share these insights than our students themselves. The ambassadors worked with myself to script and practice some key aspects they wished to highlight.
In closing our tour there is recognition that one of the key ingredients to such a proud and successful school community is the partnerships with families; so many of our programs and facilities are a result of the time and commitment made by our families through volunteering as coaches, during excursions, Governing Councillors and affiliated committees such as Fundraising, Grounds & Facilities, Health & PE.
Our next tour is scheduled for Tuesday 7th June 2022.
Governor’s Civics & Citizenship Awards
During 2021 Lesley Kong, Tammy Verrall and a group of Year 5 Students worked to raise funds and more importantly awareness through the Dance for Downs program of events. Their work was entered in the 2021 Governors’ Civics Awards and not surprisingly this committed group won.
Dressed in their finest, the group attended a ceremony at Government House on Thursday 12th Mau 2022. All were acknowledged for their outstanding contribution; the students winning the Primary Schools Group Category and Tammy and Lesley; the Educators category. (Our students have written their own account of their experience.)
LPPS School Attendance – 2022
After a challenging start to the year impacted by COVID-19, our attendance is beginning to rebound. The graph is indicative of where we had significant COVID outbreaks in term 1.
Our attendance target of 97% is attainable, but with COVID-19 is still circulating across different cohorts, it remains a challenge for 2022.
End of School Protocols
Can I remind all families that school dismissal is at 3:10pm. Families are asked to collect their children promptly. Especially now we are entering the colder months, having children and staff wait in the open is not ideal.
I would also remind those families who use the office to mind their children after school on a regular basis that this is not appropriate. LPPS has an OSHC service that is available to care for children from 3:10 onwards. There are often up to 15 children waiting sometimes as long as 40 minutes. I will be contacting families of those who regularly impose on our Front Office team to ask that they make appropriate arrangements for their children’s supervision.
Colour Fun Run
A prayer to the Weather Gods
To those of Higher Powers we beseech thee to restrain these rains,
granting us the good favour of sunshine and warmth in forthcoming days.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday we have our Colour Fun Run scheduled. We all have our fingers crossed that we can go ahead as planned. We will notify families if we need to reschedule closer to the date, most likely early Monday morning. More importantly we can’t wait for all of our families to join us!
Fiona Voigt, Principal
Governor's Civics award
By: Aniela, Alexa, Prisha, Nathan and Isabelle (Year 6 students)
On Thursday 12 of May 2022, we went to Government House to receive a Governor Civic Award. We were joined by Lesley Kong, Tammy Verrall and Fiona Voigt, our principal. We were very excited to go there but we were nervous because we were the youngest at the awards ceremony. Sadly, Frances Adamson, the Governor of South Australia, was unable to join us because she had Covid-19. She joined us virtually via a Zoom call. We were guided through what to do when our names were called and we were presented with our awards.
After some speeches by the Governor and the Minister of Education, Blair Boyer, they started presenting the awards. We were recognised for our fundraising campaign Dance for Downs, which we organised in 2021 to support our best friend Alana, who has Downs Syndrome.
When our names were called, we went up to receive our awards from the Minister. We also shook his hand and took photos with him. Each of us received a gold medal inscribed with our names and a certificate. Miss Kong and Tammy also received medals as well as an award for the school. We took more photos with our awards and the other awardees, during which we learned that the Governor was a student at LPPS herself when she was younger!
After that, we were allowed to have a walk through the Governor's house. There were a lot of big rooms with fancy furniture and paintings. We were really surprised when food started coming out on mini platters, including mini sausage rolls, quiches and cupcakes. We took a lot of photos as we explored the house and ate even more food, which made us very happy and full. On the way out we had a photo with the Queen (statue only). It was a fantastic day for us all.
Year 4 – Cyber & Internet Safety workshop
Year 4 students attended a workshop on the 16 & 17 May on ‘Cyber and Internet Safety’. The session was run by Richard Rowland from ‘FYI Drug and Health Education’. Richard, a qualified teacher, is an Educational Entertainment Specialist.
The interactive workshop focused on:
- Social media contracts and the dangers of agreeing to them;
- Identify theft and the importance of strong, secure passwords;
- Cyber Safety rules and being aware of posting photographs and comments on-line;
- Cyber-bullying. What to do if it’s happening and the steps to prevent this.
South Australian Schools Orienteering Championships
On Monday 23rd May, Linden Park Primary School had 19 students represent the school at the South Australian Schools Orienteering Championships.
The students arrived bright and early and travelled by bus to Belair National Park for the Championships. Students had to navigate their way through the National Park course, competing against other pupils from different primary schools in their age group. A few LPPS students even had to compete against a friendly group of kangaroos to try and circumnavigate the course in the quickest time possible.
Everyone completed the trail in impressive times and represented Linden Park Primary proudly by supporting not only each other but other students from rural and metropolitan schools. Big congratulations to student Oliver S. who placed 2nd in his 12-year-old race.
It was a fantastic day up in the foothills, we could not have asked for a better forecast and the students created a very enjoyable atmosphere to be a part of.
Thank you to the all students for doing Linden Park Primary proud and thank you to PE teacher Kathy Wall for organising the team and to French teacher Melanie Fuller for assisting with the smooth running of the day.
Harry Slee, Sports Coordinator
Year 4 Maritime Museum excursion
Our Year 4 students visited the Maritime Museum to undertake their “Life on Board” program on Tuesday and Wednesday 17/18th May.
Students were able to get an understanding of just how difficult life on board for migrants would have been as they travelled by ship from England to South Australia in 1836. The day also included a self-guided tour of the museum, as well as a short cruise of the Port River. We would like to say a special thankyou to all our wonderful parent volunteers who attended on the day and supported students!
National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD)
Last Friday, May 20th, 2022 it was National Walk Safely to School Day. At Linden Park a group of enthusiastic families met Henry Nicholson and Rachel Pontifex at Miller Reserve and walked to school as a group under the autumn trees down Hay Road.
Before we started our walk, we spoke about the main benefits of walking to school.
- Children learn about safe pedestrian behaviour.
- Walking to school promotes time spent with family and a healthy lifestyle.
- Walking to school reduces the traffic congestion around our school.
We were met at school by our senior SAC members who handed out WSTSD tattoos for those students who participated in the walk.
On our walk we reflected how lovely it was to take the time to walk to school so I encourage all families, when the time, distance or weather permits, please think about walking your students to school on a regular basis.
Kind regards, SAC committee
National Reconcilation Week 2022
NRW starts Friday Week 4 and ends Friday Week 5 and our staff will be engaging students in a range of activities.
The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey- the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
The NRW 2022 theme, "Be Brave. Make Change." is a challenge to all Australians-individuals, families, communities, organisations and government-to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
