Principal's report
Before and After school protocols
A reminder to families that COVID protocols are still in place especially as we anticipate a new variant of the OMICRON strain. Families are asked not to stay once their children are settled and supervised before school. The Junior Primary playground is open before school to enable families to spread out. Once your child has placed their bag at their line-up spot or classroom door they are encouraged to play until the bell goes at 8:50am.
At days’ end families are asked to leave the grounds promptly once they have collected their children; the playgrounds remain closed after school. Unfortunately one of the staff was spoken to quite disrespectfully when they reminded a parent. I would invite all members of our community to remember that the positive collaboration between school and families is at the very heart of education.
Road Safety reminder
Members of the community are contacting the school raising concerns for the safety of our students crossing roads, notably Portrush Road. It is vital that children use the pedestrian crossing to ensure their safety. Can all families please remind their children of the importance of taking responsibility and being aware when crossing roads.
Semester 1 2022 Student Reports
Parents, please take time to log into the parent portal to view your child’s academic report for Semester 1 2022 (Term 1 + Term 2). Written reports with grades are just one of the ways we communicate student achievement with you. Please see your child’s teacher in the first instance if you have any questions about the report. Follow up interviews can be arranged on request.
The Linden Park Primary Cookbook (Fundraising venture)
To acknowledge the cultural diversity and make connections to the International Baccalaureate Units of Inquiry, ‘Who we are’ the Community & Fundraising committee are compiling a list of recipes that are family and community favourites.
If you are willing to share please send your delicious recipes, savoury or sweet, to lpps.candf@gmail.com by Friday, 19 August 2022. A picture or drawing to accompany would complement but is not essential, we are more interested in the recipes.
Gratitude and thanks…
As we reach the half way mark of 2022, I would like to thank our parent volunteers for their contributions. Without volunteers; our Governing Council committees wouldn’t have capacity to fundraise, manage the finances, oversee the grounds and campus development etc, our camps would struggle to go ahead, our sporting teams, relying on the ongoing commitment of team managers and coaches, would fold and excursions including swimming and trips that spark children’s curiousity into their Inquiry Units would be restricted. Our learning programs would be significantly less than without the gift of our volunteers’ time – thank you.
To the staff of Linden Park Primary School, I would like to acknowledge the energy and commitment all have made to ensuring that the quality and integrity of learning programs has been maintained. Staff have ensured that students have accessed the rich learning programs that are cornerstone of education at LPPS despite the impacts of a pandemic. Our communication and operations have continued at the highest level thanks to a dedicated Administration team that often go above and beyond their role descriptions.
On that note may I wish all; staff and students a wonderful holiday and look forward to the start of Term 3 and all that it brings.
Spotlight on Learning
During a visit to the Year 6 classes I noted that many of our students were crafting biographies as part of their Units of Inquiry, ‘Where we are in place & space’ and ‘Who we are.’ What made these special were the personal connections that students had to the migration stories and the importance of recognising the diverse multi-cultural community we belong to. I invited two students, Maddy and Charlotte to share their learning during this term.
What migration has done for us!
As part of our PYP (Primary Years Program) inquiry we have researched the impacts of migration and how history shapes our lives today. When we understand why people migrate and their story, we learn more about them and the purposes of migration. Once understanding refugee and migrant stories, people show more empathy towards other cultures and beliefs. We also wrote biographies about a person we know who has migrated to Australia. Here is a snippet of two bios:
Amanda Schroeter : Moving to Australia
Amanda and her family moved in 1985 in December from New Zealand to Australia, therefore the journey wasn’t that long. She flew by plane and it was her first time travelling overseas. Her family moved because her Dad got a job in Australia to become a doctor (paediatrician). There wasn’t anything wrong with New Zealand, Amanda’s parents simply wanted to provide their children with more opportunities in the future. It got a lot of getting used to but eventually she settled and became more comfortable. She lived in a rental house in West Beach (SA), and everyday, she would go to the beach. Although Australia was different to New Zealand, Amanda was very grateful for where she lived now. For Christmas, she got lots of new clothes for the rest of summer because all her other clothes were not appropriate for the weather in Australia. (A snippet from Maddy’s biography).
Tadeusz Kepka : Moving to Australia
Tadeuz Kepka and his family moved to Australia from Poland in 1991. He moved to Australia because the economic system was really horrible in Poland and he wanted a better future for his family. He said that the economy was better, which was what Tadeusz was looking for. He had previously been to Australia since he travelled for work. He loved Australia every time he went there. He also partially knew the English language because of his travelling. The downsides of moving to Australia for him were leaving his parents and other brother behind. There were tears and everyone was upset, but moving to Australia was going to provide a better life for them all. They travelled to Australia on a plane. The flight would take approximately 23 hours. His family couldn’t believe that they were going to a country where they didn’t even know the language that they spoke. (A snippet from Charlotte’s biography).

Remembering Roberta
On Monday (4 July) friends and family gathered in honour of Roberta Spreadbury.
Roberta’s family planted a Linden tree and another was gifted to her husband Howard, to create the enduring connection between LPPS and family.
Roberta created a legacy; her presence has left a lasting impact, she touched families, teachers, children and a community.
In testament of Roberta’s essence the sky turned purple during the gathering – her favourite colour.

Welcome Cameron to the Linden Park Primary School community.
Library news
We’ll be the judge!
This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) is having its inaugural year of the Shadow Judging Program. Groups of students from around the country nominated to be part of this exciting project and Linden Park was chosen to participate and receive funding. Each school group chooses one of the shortlisted categories of books to judge. We are called shadow judges because we are following a similar process and using the same judging criteria as the official CBCA judges. Our LPPS group of shadow judges chose the Picture Book category. Year 6 students who have volunteered their lunch times to meet have been reading the books, pulling apart what the criteria means and beginning to evaluate the books based on the judging criteria. We were very fortunate to get funding from the CBCA to have South Australian children’s author, Adam Cece, visit us this week and help us understand the judging criteria and apply it to the shortlisted picture books. We will let you know once we’ve chosen the picture book that we think should be the winner.
The shortlisted picture books this year:
The winners are in - the 2022 Readers Cup
The library has been very busy this week. We have also had our 4th annual Year 6 Readers’ Cup competition on Thursday. This year we had twelve Year 6 groups of three to four students each. Participating students read 5 books throughout the term. The competition is similar to a quiz night where there are 5 rounds with 10 questions each. Each round has questions about one of the books. The winning team this year was ‘The Outcasts’, Room 40 students: Daniel H, Daniel K., Myles and Aaminah. Each student on the winning team will choose a book for the library to purchase as a prize as well as the privilege of having their team name engraved on our perpetual trophy. The top 3 teams will meet with a bookseller next term to choose books to purchase for our library.
The 2nd place team was ‘Imagine Losing’ (Armaan, Asher and Shayaan from Room 41) and ‘J.K. Rollers’ from Room 39 (Jordan, Max, Lua and Mehrad) was the third place team.
We also had a staff team that included Fiona, Madame McCallum, Kane Watkins and Georgina Zawada. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event that celebrates reading.

SAC News
Semester One has been a very successful time for our SAC reps. It was the first time we introduced a new format of how our SAC groups looked. The Even Stevens SAC is a group of representatives from Reception, Year 2, Year 4 and some Year 6 helpers. The Odd Bods SAC is a group of representatives from Years 1, 3, & 5 and some Year 6 helpers. Vertically grouping the students this way generated buddy support, especially for our younger students.
As this Semester will be the end of their leadership roles, we held a pizza party on Friday, 1 July to celebrate the great ideas, contributions and leadership these groups of students have demonstrated throughout the semester.
Rachel Pontifix, Student Wellbeing Leader
Year 6 Camp
Year 6 students attended a camp at Adare, Victor Harbor on 27-29 June.

Activities included: Raft Making; Kayaking; Flying Kiwi; Mountain Biking; Brain Twister; Beach Games; Tribal Games A big thank you to all our volunteers.
Interschool Debating – Debating SA
Over the course of Term 2, Linden Park Primary School have had 10 teams competing in South Australia’s Premier Schools’ Debating Competition. The Schools’ Competition is an inter-school debating competition held each year from May to September. Each school team that enters debates approximately every three weeks at Pulteney Grammar School on a Tuesday evening. Topics for debates are challenging and contemporary.
We have close to 50 students representing Linden Park Primary School across Year 5 & Year 6. Students have been attending weekly training and practice sessions since the mid-point of Term 1. Students receive their topics and have three weeks to prepare their arguments. Teams are either arguing for the affirmative position or the negative position.
Some of the topics the students have debated in Term 2 are:
Year 5:
- That cats are better than dogs
- That CASA rules allowing pets in the cabin should be adopted by Australian airlines
- That it is better to be an only child
Year 6:
- That swooping magpies should be culled
- That the expansion of McDonalds into regional Australia should be stopped
- That Australian primary school students should cook and serve lunch.
Linden Park Primary School have achieved some great results, with some students taking out individual awards for ‘Debater of the Night’. We look forward to their continued growth in Term 3.

Year 5/6 School Sport SA Soccer
Our Year 5/6 School Sport SA (SAPSASA) Knockout Soccer team played their first round matches against Stradbroke Primary and Marryatville Primary on Monday 4th of July.
The forecast was perfect for soccer as our team came into the first round matches full of confidence after a month of trials and training. We were up against Stradbroke Primary School and the team started really well with some great passes from Nate T and Oliver S setting up some great opportunities for their teammates. Ashley B managed to find the back of the net with smart positioning for our first goal of the game. From here, the team did not look back with Myles K making some fantastic runs down the wing making it easy for his teammates to score. Everyone had a real influence in the game and the team cruised to victory. Massimo B, Harry Y and Myles K all finished with a double and with some excellent striking, Lua E scored from a corner kick with some help from the opposition to finish with one goal. Ashley B, Oliver S, Patrick L and Jack W all joined the party as well to finish with a goal each. Our defence did really well not giving Stradbroke any easy opportunities. It was a fantastic team performance and when the final whistle went, the score was 11-1.
Everything came down to our final match against Marryatville Primary School, who had also won their first game. This meant we had to win to progress to the next round of the competition. It was an arm wrestle the first 10 minutes of the match, with majority of the ball spent in Marryatville’s front half. Junghyun C did a fantastic job in Goal Keeper holding off the constant pressure from their strikers but unfortunately, they scored the first goal. Saven L and Donald Z continued to work tirelessly as they had all day after a change of position from the first match. Our defenders were continually under pressure from Marryatville’s slick ball movement and creativity, David W stood up strong in his position to put the pressure back on the other team. Linden Park continued to press with Patrick L holding the defence together with his inspiring play, making some goal saving tackles. The half-time whistle went, Linden Park were down by a goal, 0-1.
Mr. Moss’ message at half time was that the team was right in the game but just needed to make the most of their opportunities going forward. Linden Park were up for the challenge and needed to recapture their goal scoring form from the first game.
Myles K and Nate T continued to look damaging as they moved the ball quickly down the wing creating some late chances for Linden Park but we still could not hit the scoreboard. Minutes were ticking away and the game looked all over for Linden Park’s point of view but the team would not throw in the towel. They continued to attack and with under 4 minutes to play; Massimo B received a cross in the middle of the box and calmly put the ball passed the keeper to score our first goal and the equaliser. It was a magnificent play and the game looked set to be heading into extra time.
We continued to attack and as each second ticked by, our chances of winning got slimmer and slimmer. Out of nowhere, Oliver S received a great through ball and broke away from his opponent; it was now just him and the keeper. We were into the final 60 seconds, was this the match-winning goal Linden Park desperately needed? Oliver S gathered the ball and with ice in his veins, placed the ball in the bottom left hand corner. The team and the crowd went wild, Oliver S had put the team up 2-1 with under a minute to go.
Marryatville took the kick off and went full-out attack mode, making a quick play down their attacking end. Linden Park were doing all they could to put pressure on the ball. The ball flicked out to the Marryatville striker who took a flying shot for goal. Fortunately, for Linden Park, it went out of play for a goal kick. The final whistle was blown and Linden Park finished 2-1 to Marryatville Primary. We were through to the second round with a last minute winner!
The team celebrated graciously and knew that they were so close to feeling what their opposition were currently going through. Marryatville Primary School’s coach was very impressed with Linden Park’s spirit, determination and never give up attitude.
Congratulations to the team who played an exciting brand of soccer with some excellent team play. A big thank you to Mr. Moss and the team for another enjoyable day of school sport. Linden Park will progress to the second round and will meet Trinity Gardens and Nazareth Catholic College in early Term 3.

SAPSASA – Golf
By: Thomas Daly (Year 4 Student)
On Friday 17th June, Linden Park Primary School had four students who participated in the South Australia 12 & under School Golf Event at the Mount Osmond Golf Course.
Ryan Z. and Luke P. from Year 5 and Ken B. and Thomas D. from Year 4 were the students who represented Linden Park Primary.
Ryan Z. scored 72, Ken B. got 62, Thomas D. scored 55 and Luke P. got 53. The top nine players of the day qualified and congratulations to Luke P. who qualified.
We did a skill session before we played nine holes. It was a good day of golf. Thomas D. and Ken B. played together and Ryan Z. and Luke P. played together. There was a sand bunker on every hole and one hole had water on it. Luckily, I only went in one bunker.
LPPS represent ASE at State Carnivals
Over the past few weeks, Linden Park Primary have had students represent the Adelaide South East District in both Hockey and Netball in State Carnivals.
Calvin T (Year 6) and Akira O (Year 5) represented ASE in the School Sport SA (SAPSASA) Hockey Carnival on 22nd June – 24th June. They played their heart out against 9 other teams and finished second! They loved playing with other boys in the ASE district. They were coached by a very experienced coach, Jenny Kiel and improved with every game they played.
Ava T and Mia K (Year 5) also represented ASE at the School Sport SA (SAPSASA) Netball carnival in Week 8 of Term 2. The girls attended weeks of trials and being selected in a predominately Year 6 team was a fantastic achievement.
Congratulations to all students on representing not only Linden Park Primary School but also the Adelaide South East District at the State Carnivals.

Out of hours soccer (U11 Red)
Match reports by: Chris Morrison, U/11 LPPS Red Coach
25 June: LP Red Lions 8 - Trinity Gardens 0
The Lions resurgence under new management continued as every player played their part in a thrilling win. Massi scored a hat trick with two brilliant goals, and one really lucky one. Van, Ashley and Cristiano scored one or two each and none of us can forget Seth’s mighty strike.
Our backline of Vincent, Diego, and Mateo once again created a great barrier as Nandan, Zach and Mark managed to corral the other teams strikers in midfield. Well played again lads.
2nd July: LP Red Lions 8 - Marryatville 1
Ashley scored a first half hat trick including a sublime and rare, left foot finish, Van added another as did ‘never-to-be-forgotten’ Seth.
But the second half bought the real drama with Mark in goal. With the goalie shirt almost reaching his boots Mark parried, punched and kicked away every shot he faced. Our defenders Diego, Ben, Vincent and Mateo were brilliant as they repelled lots of attacks while Massi added a couple more goals. Nandan was tireless in midfield and Zach’s positioning in left wing was excellent. Have the Red Lions finally found their No.1 goalie??
U12 Boys State SAPSASA School Boy Team
Congratulations to Myles K. who has been selected as one of 25 boys from across the entire state who will represent the School Sport SA U12 Boys Soccer Team at the Football Federation SA Carnival (22 - 24 July) at the State Centre of Football. Well done Myles!
