Kaurna acknowledgement
Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.
Principal's report
Dear families,
What an incredible finish to the term with our “Learning Journeys”. The energy and excitement has been palpable with families and students being able to share the experiences and growth that children have made over the course of the year. I would like to congratulate the teachers in preparing the learning environments, Learning Journals and the students’ ability to talk about their learning – all of which are pivotal in creating the pride in achievement that children feel during this reporting process.
Traffic Changes to Highfield Avenue including Durham Avenue Cul de Sac (No through Road)
LPPS Governing Council have been liaising with Burnside Council, seeking to improve the traffic congestion and risks to our school community during peak traffic times of before and after school.
The outcome has been to remove access to Durham Avenue as a drop-off and collection point. From Monday, 17 October (start of Term 4), we are asking families not to turn-into Durham Avenue cul-de-sac (No through Road), to drop off or pick up, as the current carparks will no longer be available to families. These changes have been made to protect the pedestrian traffic leaving Durham Avenue and to direct students and families to arrive and leave safely via the School road crossing.
Drop off and pick up is still available along the school (northern) side of Highfield Avenue, at the 2 minute passenger loading locations. There is NO STANDING (including kiss and drop) available on the Southern side of Highfield for morning drop off, or afternoon pick up ie. 8:00am–9:15am and 3:00pm–4:00pm.
Suggestions to support the traffic flow is to ask our community to treat Highfield Avenue as a one-way street during drop off and pick-up. The signage along the road supports using the Northern side of the road (closest to the school) as parking for ‘Kiss and drop’.
We look forward to your cooperation to help make our School environment a safer place.
Linden Park Primary School - 2023 M&S Fee Polling
You will shortly be receiving an email to vote on the 2023 Linden Park Primary School Materials and Services Charge (School Fees).
On behalf of Governing Council, we request your support of its recommendation to increase the legally recoverable amount for the 2023 Materials and Services Charge by $10 to $470.00 for Year Levels Reception – Year 6. We have researched our local schools and find our fees are comparable with our neighbours.
Please vote ‘Yes’ as this will enable us to continue to maintain our current programs.
Regards, LPPS Leadership Team & the LPPS Governing Council.
Holiday wishes
Can I wish all members of the school community a well-earned rest; Term 4 is always a time of celebration and reflection as we welcome new families and farewell our wonderful Year 6 students. Have a wonderful break, hopeful that the sun starts to shine and the rain clears for a bit!
Quote for reflection

Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) update
As part of our RAP, we are committed to acknowledging Country and it's importance to First Nations peoples. You may already know that LPPS sits on Kaurna Yerta (Kaurna land). One of our RAP goals is "We want to make our school a place where First Nations Culture is visibly celebrated in meaningful, authentic and respectful ways. We want our students, staff and the wider community to see these visible demonstrations of respect towards First Nations culture as a vital part of the fabric of our school."
To work towards this goal, we have ordered a beautiful Acknowledgment of Country plaque from 100% Aboriginal owned and operated business, Kinya Lerrk (https://kinyalerrk.com.au/).Check it out next time you're in the front office!

Library news
Library Catalogue online
Our library management system is now online for families to access at home. The link is on the home page of our library website, http://lindenparkprimaryschoollibrary.weebly.com/
Students may browse the books in our collection, check their loans and even make reservations from home. Students can log into their account by using their Google logins and the password, library. Having the catalogue online is a great way for families to find out what books the library owns and discuss with your children what books they might like to borrow next.
Graphic Novels
Our graphic novel collection is a much-loved collection for our primary students. You may have noticed in book shops and public libraries that graphic novels have become very popular everywhere. We continually add to our graphic novels so students have access to numerous titles. Graphic novels support reading development in many ways, especially comprehension, visual literacy and vocabulary development. They require students to make inferences and read between the text and graphics to understand the plot and character development. You may be interested in reading this article to learn more about the benefits of reading graphic novels. Or you can listen to what the students have to say about them:
- “I think they’ve got more of an explanation. They’re actually showing you what is happening.” (Janson, rm 29).
- “I like novels but when it is a graphic novel it’s easier to read and really interesting.” (Eliza, rm 24).
- “I like looking at pictures so I stick with graphic novels because they’re easier to read. The pictures make it so understandable.” (Vishni, rm 24).
- “They don’t have many words so they don’t go overdue. They have lots of pictures to show what is happening.” (Angela, rm 21).

Learning Journeys
Learning Journeys
Learning in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides many formal and informal reporting opportunities for students to demonstrate how they have developed and applied their knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and learner profile attributes through the inquiries they undertake. Learning Journeys provide an opportunity for parents to experience the PYP in action. As communicators, students are able to verbalise and demonstrate their knowledge on what they have learnt. They lead the journey and share what they have collaborated, investigated, researched, inquired and designed. This year the Learning Journeys were held face-to-face in the classroom, where students conversed with family members to explain their thinking.

Festival of Music
On Tuesday 22nd September, 30 of our year 6 students performed on stage at the Adelaide Festival Theatre as part of the Public Primary Schools Festival of Music.
The Primary Schools Festival of Music, an official state icon, and is custodian of an iconic South Australian tradition that began in 1891, we engage our students in artistic excellence, cultural diversity and social inclusion through performance in Music and the Arts.
Annie Kwok a South Australia Composer, Musician and Primary School Music Teacher wrote the song “Who Knows?” Hundreds of students from South Australian Public schools auditioned to sing the duet for this song, and LPPS students Maddy and Lori (Room 39) were honoured to be selected. Lori and Maddy gave a beautiful performance on the night with outstanding harmonies and star quality.
This year The Festival of Music commissioned Dan Walker to compose a set of four songs entitled “The Space Between Us”. It is not just about the space that exists above our heads, but the space all around us. Students learned complex harmonies and Auslan Sign Language.
During the concerts there were a number of guest artists from public primary and secondary schools, other choir items that presented different musical genre, and two pieces that specifically showcased the talents of the orchestra. Genevieve from LPPS (Room 26) performed percussion in the Junk Squad, an ensemble of students who created music from buckets, tin lids and brooms.
It was a spectacular event that our students enjoyed being a part of.

Wellbeing Action Committee
Welcome to the Wellbeing Action Committee. Our committee consists of Linden Park staff, parents and students. This week, the sub-committee that focuses on Engagement at School will be introducing themselves. Claudia is a year 3 teacher in room 16. Tegan is a part of the SSO administration staff and works in the front office. Iris (year 4) and Josh (year 3) are our student voice members.
Some things we like to do for our wellbeing includes, being outside, walking around our school, talking to our friends and teachers, meditating, reading and patterned breathing.
Linden Park makes us feel safe and supported by ensuring we have people around us we can trust like teachers or buddies. We have a wonderful leadership team that can support us with any issues and an admin team that always has the answers to our questions.
Some of our favourite spots in the school include the library, playground and peace garden. Keep an eye out for the next staff introduction in the newsletter next term.
School Sport SA - Year 5/6 Statewide Knockout Cricket Competition
On Tuesday 27th September, Linden Park Primary hosted Magill Primary in the first round match of the Statewide Schools Knockout Cricket Competition at Mariner Oval. The game was initially scheduled to be played in Term 1 but due to COVID-19, the game had to be postponed.
On a drizzly morning with plenty of rain the night before, the Year 5/6 Knockout team were ready to take on the rivals, Magill Primary. Captain, Imeth R lost the toss and Linden Park were sent into bat.
Openers Imeth R and Rohan D had a tough job facing the first few overs of the match in overcast conditions. Unfortunately, Magill struck early in the first over with a beautiful in-swinging yorker knocking over the stumps. A similar dismissal in the second over of the day had Linden Park 2 down for not many and the pressure was right on the host side. Kyle F came to the crease and was able to put on a courageous partnership with Rohan D to steady the ship. Unfortunately, Magill got another break through as we started to put some runs on the board.
Zacharia K, Victor M, Ashley B and Myles K put on some valuable runs in the lower order to have Linden Park finish 4/73 after our 20 overs.
Magill needed 74 to win and Neil I was handed the ball. Some great line and length bowling made it difficult for Magill to get off to a good start. Some tremendous fielding from Kyle F at cover, as he was able through the stumps down for a run out. Magill were 1 down for 15 after four overs. Tomas I and Billy R came into bowl and worked fantastically in tandem, both attacking the stumps with pace. Ali H had the gloves on behind the wicket and was leaping like a cat to save the ball. The runs and balls continued to tick over and Magill were in the box seat to chase down the target. Vinuk was handed the ball and bowled a tremendous over ending in a maiden. The game was in the last 2 overs of the day and Magill only needed a few runs to win the game. The Linden Park boys were right in it but some great running between the wickets from Magill got them over the line. It was a great effort by Linden Park, as majority of the team had not picked up a bat or ball since the previous cricket season and they played the game in great spirit.

Year 3/4 School Sport SA Tennis
On Wednesday 28th September, two teams from Linden Park Primary School participated in the Adelaide South East district tennis carnival. This was the first year the competition was being run with Year 3/4 students and the competition was made up of a Pathway division for more experienced players along with a Participation division for those new to the sport. The competition throughout the day was of a mixed standard, with some highly competitive matches played across both teams. All of our students represented the school with pride and behaved impeccably, demonstrating that not only could they be fantastic players but more importantly fantastic people at the same time. They should be very proud of their achievements and performance on and off the tennis court.
Our Pathway team consisting of Jeremy X, Chuyi P, Elaine W, Danny G, Nicholas N, Ken B, Lucas S, Oliver D and Aayan K ran out overall winners on the day, winning many and losing very few matches across the day. This means that they have qualified to attend the state finals day in Term 4 and hopefully will look to continue the excellent tennis performances of Linden Park PS students in years gone by. Our Participation team of Daivik B, Josh C, Thomas D, Asher D, Sammy G, Alexa K, Jeevan S and Sam S also had some excellent results on the day with a lot of the students playing their first competitive matches of tennis.

Interschool Chess Finals
By Carrie (Chess Manager) .......
After 7 preliminary rounds of the Inter-School Chess Competition, Linden Park Grade B & C Chess teams qualified for finals and played on the 16th September.
The final score was extremely tight in Grade B, the top 3 were only 0.5 points apart. Our Grade B team came 3rd in the final standings. The team was formed with Cindy C, Charlotte C, Ryan L, Tiger T and Kiyara M. Our team scooped 3 out of 4 points each round for the first 2 rounds and were sitting comfortably at the first table. We then extended our lead in the third round with 8 points in the pocket before the start of the last round. The other schools chasing us grabbed 4 points from their weaker opponents in the last round while we were fighting until the last minute, surrounded by spectators from all other schools. At the end, the other schools overtook us, ending up in first and second place, while we came third. Cindy was sitting at the first board against the strongest players from each school, and impressively, she managed to win all 4 rounds. All the players did their best to build up this incredible score, making the LPPS team finish on the honour board. A job well done!
Henry W, Ian W, Tyki T and Liam F represented our Grade C team in the finals. They were facing the strongest school's team, East Marden, but unfortunately, they ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. However, in the next two rounds, the boys had a strong comeback, getting 2 points in the second round and 4 points in the third round, making our team jump to a higher position. The boys defended well to stay in 7th place in the final standing amongst 16 teams. Henry W sat at the first board, battling with the strongest players from each school and secured 2 points, while Liam F won 3 out of 4 games. Ian W and Tyki T also contributed points to the final score. A stellar performance!
Evelyn Koshnitsky Shield
On Friday 23rd September, the Linden Park Primary Chess Team took part in the prestigious Evelyn Koshnitsky Shield. The EK Shield is an invitational event to the most active primary chess schools in the SAJCL competition to work who has the right to hold the Champion Primary School shield for the year. It was an honour to be invited to the competition, and the team was raring to go.
Led by the captain Ansh B with the other 7 players, they battled through four rounds of tough matches against strong players from other schools. It was a tight contest. After suffering a blow in the first round, the team managed to turn around a tough-looking situation, catching up to the schools in front. Keeping their position in the third match, LPPS faced increasingly stronger opponents in the last game. Despite their best efforts, they couldn't bring the shield home. Nevertheless, some brilliant chess was played. Congratulations to Kyle F, Joshua S, Ansh B, Cindy C, Charlotte C, Tiger T, Kiyara M and Charles W-S on their performance at the EK Shield. This was the last game for the season, the team is looking forward to the next year.
Out of hours sport
Thank you to all of our coaches.
As our winter season draws to a close, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our parent volunteers who have coached or managed one of our sporting teams this winter season.
Our students would not be able to participate if it was not for every single one of you. It is great to chat to the students in the school yard about their sporting teams and the smiles on their faces when they talked about their team. So a huge thank you!
