Kaurna acknowledgement
Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.
Principal's report
Dear families and friends,
What an amazing year at Linden Park Primary School. At this time of the year, we need to take a breath and acknowledge that 2022 has shown how resilient and committed we are to achieving the very best for all; as a staff, a community and most importantly our students.
At the beginning of the year remote learning capabilities were put to the test for Years 2-6 with our Receptions starting their formal education in unfamiliar territory; masks, social distancing and families being held at bay. And here we are at years’ end, taking every opportunity to gather and celebrate success.
The commitment of the LPPS staff has truly been inspiring. As teams, they endeavour to provide learning experiences that develop higher order thinking skills and position learners as global citizens that are agents for change. The Learning Journeys and Exhibition showcase the strength of progress and learning through an IB lens.
In my first year I have had the benefit of a dedicated and generous Governing Council that have provided guidance and support. I would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of two outgoing councilors; Amy Bredon and Susie Inat. Both have played key roles in the governance and financial management of our school.
To our Year 6 students, we wish them all the best at high school and hope they take the values of Linden Park with them throughout their lives. I know they are excited for the new adventures that are ahead of them.
Cause for Celebration
Next Wednesday morning the whole school community is invited to gather under the COLA to celebrate at our end of year concert. The performance starts at 9:00am with coffee and muffins available to purchase from 8:15am. All year levels will be performing in addition to our Year 2 and 6 choirs and we will announce the LPPS Volunteer of the Year.
Class Placement and Student Reports
On Monday 12th December, students will receive their class placement letter for 2023. Students will visit their 2023 class on Monday just before recess and reports will be published to the Sentral Parent Portal on Wednesday. If you have any questions or concerns about class placement, please direct them in writing through your child’s teacher in the first instance. If you need any assistance accessing the parent portal please contact Tegan or Mel in the front office.
End of 2022
Friday 16th December is the end of Term 4 and a reminder to parents that we will finish early at 2:10pm. Charlie, one of the educators from OSHC is working with the Student Action Committee (SAC) to raise funds for The Hutt Street Centre. The Hutt Street Centre provides support for many of the 6000 homeless in Adelaide. Charlie is planning to shave his golden locks at lunchtime on the steps of the gym, any donations will be gratefully appreciated!
Year 3 Assembly – “Day of the Dead Celebration”
During the Year 3 Assembly, students proudly displayed their masks as an acknowledgement of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of The Dead. This celebration takes place all over Latin America and originated in Mexico. People celebrate life and death by wearing colourful skull masks (calaveras) and display skeletons (calcas). Families clean and decorate gravesites of loved on Dia de los Muertos.

Abbey Boord, Teacher (Year 2 - Room 1)
Discuss your role in the school.....
My name is Abbey and I am a Year 2 teacher in Room 1 as well as the Team Leader for my wonderful team.
What do you do to help your wellbeing?....
I love to go to the gym before school. It gives me some time to switch off from thinking about that always growing to do list! I also love to read at night and go for walks up Mount Osmond on the weekends.
Where is your favourite place in the school (library, peace garden, front office)?.....
I can't choose just one - I love being in my classroom with my students, the EY yard/oval on a sunny day and the EY building in general.
What is important to you about being a part of LPPS?.....
I love the community we are part of at LPPS. I started here on my first prac in 2017, joined the OSHC team and then became a teacher. Since the moment I started as a pre-service teacher I felt part of the school. The relationships the children and staff build are a positive aspect that allows us to do our best teaching and learning.
Where can you go for wellbeing support?.....
My amazing Year 2 team are always there to listen and help support me. They are my go-to for wellbeing support.

Year 2 Choir News
Niina Marni!
On Wednesday, 7 December, the Year 2 Choir were given an exciting opportunity in conjunction with Kaurna Warra Pintyanthi (KWP) from Adelaide University. A film crew from the university came to visit our choir rehearsal and filmed the choir performing their song ‘You’re the Voice’, made famous by John Farnham, although the choir sings it in a very different way as the chorus has been translated into the local language of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains, the Kaurna language. Rob Amery, a senior Kaurna language expert at Adelaide University had the chorus translated especially for the Linden Park Primary School Year 2 Choir who have been working on the song all term.
Once the video has been edited, KWP plan to post the clip on their Kaurna youtube channel for the public to view and learn about the Kaurna language. The KWP team produce regular professional quality video clips across the local community on Kaurna language and culture which helps to boost the revival of the Kaurna language in Adelaide and the Adelaide plains.
In 2018, the Year 2 Choir at Linden Park Primary School participated in a similar project with Adelaide University, recording the well-known Australian song We are One (I Am Australian) with the chorus in Kaurna. It was a big success and a special memory for the children who are now our 2022 Year 6 graduates. You can view the clip from 2018 through the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWpwV7TOoOg
Kaurna Warra Pintyanthi (KWP) at the University of Adelaide was established in 2002 by Kaurna Elders, Dr Lewis Kauwanu Yerloburka O'Brien and Dr Alitya Wallara Rigney together with Linguist, Assoc. Professor Rob Amery. It is a body of Kaurna people, teachers, linguists and language enthusiasts who are passionate about the reclamation and revival of the Kaurna language. The KWP committee grew out of a series of Kaurna language development workshops funded by a University of Adelaide small grant in 2000. KWP is hosted by the Dept. of Linguistics, School of Humanities, at the University of Adelaide.
After about 150 years since it was last spoken in a day-to-day context in early colonial South Australia, in the mid-1800s, the Kaurna language has come alive again and is used and taught at many places in Kaurna Country.

Thank you to all the Year 2 Team who have helped to support choir this semester, to Vanessa Buttery who supported the filming and to the parents who helped children practice the song at home.
You can hear the Year 2 Choir debut their song ‘You’re the Voice’ (with Kaurna Chorus) live at our end of year celebration next Wednesday morning, 14 December.

Year 3/4 Tennis Newsletter
On Tuesday, 29 November, Linden Park Primary had 9 students participate in the Year 3/4 Tennis SA Metro Hot Shot State Final. The team was awarded an invitation to the State Final after winning the Adelaide South East Carnival in September.
The events are the culmination of 46 Tennis Hot Shots District School Carnivals held around the state throughout 2022, with the top two country and city schools receiving an Adelaide International experience in January 2023. The Adelaide International is a professional tennis tournament where the best players around the world come to play in Adelaide before the Australian Open.
Tennis Hot Shots School Carnivals provide the opportunity for students of all abilities to play with their school friends and meet other students from surrounding schools. With a round robin style draw, the schools play doubles matches with simple scoring and time keeping to ensure all students are actively able to participate on the day.
16 teams across Adelaide were invited to the State Metro Final after all qualifying by winning their respective district tournaments. Linden Park played 7 games during the day and qualified at the top of the ladder after not losing a game all day. This meant they needed to play Prince Alfred College in the grand final. PAC had won the tournament 3 times in the last 4 years so Linden Park were up against good competition.
It was a hotly contested battle with PAC, with both teams playing some excellent tennis. The score was even halfway through the match and it was going to take a big effort for Linden Park to gain the lead. With some great teamwork and brilliance Linden Park were able to beat PAC 5-3.
A big thank you to Chuyi P, Jeremy X, Elaine W, Danny G, Nicholas N, Ken B, Lucas S, Oliver D & Aayan K who represented Linden Park Primary with pride. A special thank you to the parents who were able to assist with transporting the team to and from the venue, without their help this achievement would not have been possible.
As champions of the State Metropolitan area, Linden Park Primary will now compete against Maitland Lutheran School who were the State Country Champions at the Adelaide International in January.
Tennis SA CEO Debbie Sterrey congratulated all involved in the state finals.
“We congratulate Maitland Lutheran School (winner of the country final) and Linden Park Primary School, along with each of the schools, teachers and parents involved in the Tennis Hot Shots School State Finals this week,” Sterrey said.
“We look forward to seeing Maitland Lutheran School, St Joseph’s School, Linden Park Primary School and Prince Alfred College at the Adelaide International in January.”

Year 4
Mandalas
In Week 6, the Year 4s learned about mandalas. Cathy Gray, a professional artist, taught us how to create our own mandalas. A mandala is a detailed circular figure that is symmetrical from all sides. This style of art originated from Buddhism and is a spiritual symbol.
Mandalas are relaxing for your body and mind. When you repeat a pattern, your body finds it calming and it builds muscle memory, making it easier to create the mandala.
We had to create our mandalas in silence so we could concentrate, which was also very relaxing and stress relieving. Firstly, we started by drawing the base on a piece of paper with symmetrical circles to guide us. Then, we added more detailed patterns inside the base, after adding more patterns on top. At the end of the session, we looked at each other's mandalas. It was really surprising that they all were very different and unique, which made every single one very special.
At the end we all agreed that it was a very fun and enjoyable lesson drawing mandalas with Cathy Gray.

Year 3 Cultural workshop
As part of the our ongoing commitment to learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, on Thursday, 8 December Kumarninthi Cultural Education delivered a cultural workshop for the children.
The word "Kumarninthi" is the Kaurna word for "Becoming One" and in the 40 minute workshop students were shown traditional Aboriginal artefacts discussing what they are, what they are used for, how they are made. https://kumarninthi.com.au/
Year 4 ‘The Lorax’ drama performances
Between Monday, 28 November & Thursday, 1 December the Year 4 students (Rooms 23, 24, 25, 26 & 27) performed their PYP Learning Journey Musical called The Lorax in the LPPS Performing Arts Centre.
All classes should be incredibly proud of their performances and we thank all the parents who came to support and enjoy the show.

SAC end of term casual day
From: The Odd Bods ......
Last week Charlie Lean from LPPS OSHC came and spoke to the Odd Bods SAC about a charity he is passionate about. Charlie told us about the Hutt Street Centre and the 65 years they have been supporting disadvantaged people. Charlie told us that there are about 6,000 people in Adelaide who are currently homeless. Charlie asked if we could use our casual day money to donate to the Hutt Street Centre as aiming to spread awareness across the LPPS community to help change the mindsets and take action against victim blaming.
During lunchtime on the 16 December, Charlie will be shaving his hair to help raise awareness and he will also have raffle tickets available to make a coin donation in the front office. The tickets cost $2.00. You could win a hair care pack valued at over $150 from Franks Garage Haircuts.
