24 February 2023: Term 1 - Week 4
Principal's report
Week Four already…
Acquaintance Evenings were well supported by our community with classes across the school having high attendance. As expected, the Reception classes were filled with families but it was equally as impressive to see over 130 parents attending the Year 6 Information session in the Gym.
Swimming lessons at the Burnside Pool have started in earnest, with Years 1 and 2 completed and Year 3 scheduled for next week. Again, my thanks to those parents who supported by joining their children’s classes for swimming lessons or attended the swimming trials with year level groups. Without your support, these programs cannot go ahead as we do not have the staffing to cover so many groups.
Governing Council AGM – Monday 27 February 2023 in the staffroom
The AGM is an open meeting, which all members of the community are invited to attend. Voting for councillors is in person and proxy votes are not accepted. I would encourage all parents to attend next Mondays’ AGM, which will see last years’ reports presented and the elections of the 2023 councillors. This year we have seven vacancies to be filled; with several councillors, re-nominating and new nominees a plenty. This is indicative of the strong support and representation by our community.
Local Government- Burnside Council
Last week all of the Year 4 classes ventured to the Burnside City Council for an audience with Mayor Anne Monceaux as part of their Inquiry, ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ with the Central idea, 'Communities are shaped by rules and laws’. Mayor Anne was a wonderful host; entertaining and incredibly generous with her time. We learned about the history of our local area and what the symbols of the City crest represented. Mayor Anne explained how council is structured through local wards and there are two councilors representing each. Children were given a quiz about all the responsibilities and services that the City of Burnside Council provide.
Students had opportunity to sit in the council chamber whilst Mayor Anne provided insights into the workings of a Council meeting. Students learned that all ages can present ideas for improvement to council; citing examples of a portable skate ramp and the installation of a defibrillator at a local park.

20 Years of the Premier’s Reading Challenge
At Linden Park Primary School, we encourage all students (reception to year six) to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The Department of Education started this reading program to promote both independent reading and being read aloud to for all school-aged children.
To participate your child needs to read twelve books by September 2023, however we are asking that Linden Park students return their completed sheets by the end of this term (term 1).
Children do not need to actually do the reading themselves. Any or even all of the books can be read to your child. The title and author of the books need to be recorded on the student reading record, including an adult’s initials. This sheet has been given to the year 1 to year 6 students by their classroom teacher.
Reception students’ PRC sheets are completed by their classroom teachers and do not need to complete the program independently. The reception teachers will send their student’s sheets to the library upon completion.
The first eight books on the student reading record need to be from the PRC list. The library team have put special PRC stickers on the PRC books to identify them. Red stickers (R-2), Green stickers (3-5), Yellow stickers (6-9).
Families may also go to the PRC website where you are able to check if a particular book is on the list: www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au
This website is helpful because as much as the library team try to put stickers on all the books, we do miss some. Also, if a book is from a shop, another library or home, you may need to check. The last four books on the student reading record are free choice books. They can even be take-home reading texts (readers). The students may also like to utilise our school’s e-platform for further reading and audio materials.
Once your child has completely filled out the reading record, including their 12 books, please return the reading record to your child’s class teacher.
Please call or email the school if you have any questions and I will be glad to give you additional information.

Inquiry Ambassadors
This year we would like to welcome our Inquiry Ambassadors. This leadership role is responsible for the school’s learning and teaching, particularly around the implementation of the PYP programme and the Australian curriculum. The students work together with other students from other year levels to delve deeply into the philosophy of best practice and assist in the planning of our units of inquiry. They will use learner agency to have voice and choice in regards to the what, how and why we learn. We look forward to sharing with you our achievements in the future.

Years 1 & 2 Water Safety Swimming
As part of our Heath and Physical Education programme children in Years 1 and 2 participated in a water safety program at the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside.
The lessons were conducted by qualified Department for Education Swimming instructors.
Year 5 - Cyber Safety Incursion
With the introduction of Chromebooks there is a need to educate students about Cyber Safety. A workshop on ‘Cyber and Internet Safety’ was organised for the Year 5 students. The session was run by Richard Rowland from ‘FYI Drug and Health Education’. Richard, a qualified teacher, is an Educational Entertainment Specialist committed to inspiring students to want to learn. Students had the opportunity to use Promethean Active Response Units. The units were handheld devices allowing children to respond via a wireless connection to the Educator’s computer.
The interactive workshop focused on: -
- Social media contracts and the dangers of agreeing to them.
- Identify theft and the importance of strong, secure passwords.
- Cyber Safety rules and being aware of posting photographs and comments on-line.
- Cyber-bullying. What to do if it’s happening and the steps to prevent this.
