Principal's report
Dear families and friends,
State Leaders Day
I had the privilege of attending the State Leaders Day on Monday, hearing from the CEO, Martin Westwell, the vision for education across our state for the near future. The clear message that the wellbeing of our students (and staff) is critically important to our success as a community. We are focused on both academic achievement and well-being, as there is recognition that these aspects are complementary rather than mutually exclusive of each other. There was acknowledgment that employers are looking for people with the ability to transfer skills across sectors, show initiative and problem-solve in an ever-changing world. Linden Park Primary School students are well positioned with our focus, R-6, on developing the PYP Learner Profile Attributes and Approach’s to Learning, (Social Skills, Research, thinking, Communication and Self-management skills).
‘Who we Are’ – Painting to Music in Art
Year 3 students, guided by our Art Specialist Kara Loan, have been exploring the influence of different stimulus on their expression. Students have experimented with different ways to express emotions without imagery.
Students listened to two songs, one fast and energetic and the other was slow and peaceful. It was a fun activity as students became aware of the impacts of music on their feelings, energy and mood. The ‘Do your Thing’ by Basement Jaxx saw students energised and buzzing as they painted, whilst the calm, ‘Air on the G String’ by Bach created a relaxed atmosphere. Students began by painting lines whilst thinking about the emotions that the music provoked. Students then reflected on their works of Art and wrote about the emotions they experienced and how these feelings were communicated through their paintings. Reflections such as, What colours did we chose?, Which types of lines were used in response to the types of music were discussed to develop learners’ understanding of how both Music and Art can be used to improve our wellbeing.
NAPLAN 2023
NAPLAN testing starts next week for our Year 3 and 5 students and we encourage families to reduce any stress and pressure by reminding children that we only expect them to ‘do their best’ and to ‘give everything a go’. We also encourage families to reinforce that NAPLAN is only a small part of their assessment, all the other work they do across all learning areas contributes to their grades whereas NAPLAN does not.
The writing test for Year 3 students is still a paper one, whereas the Year 5 students complete their writing task online. The other test aspects; Grammar & Spelling, Reading and Numeracy are online and students will encounter different test questions as they progress through the tests.

Library news
20 Years of the Premier’s Reading Challenge.
At Linden Park Primary School, we encourage all students (reception to year six) to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The Department of Education started this reading program to promote both independent reading and being read aloud to for all school-aged children.
To participate your child needs to read twelve books by September 2023, however we are asking that Linden Park students return their completed sheets by the end of this term (term 1).
Children do not need to actually do the reading themselves. Any or even all of the books can be read to your child. The title and author of the books need to be recorded on the student reading record, including an adult’s initials. This sheet has been given to the year 1 to year 6 students by their classroom teacher.
Reception students’ PRC sheets are completed by their classroom teachers, do not need to complete the program independently. The reception teachers will send their student’s sheets to the library upon completion.
The first eight books on the student reading record need to be from the PRC list. The library team have put special PRC stickers on the PRC books to identify them. Red stickers (R-2), Green stickers (3-5), Yellow stickers (6-9).
Families may also go to the PRC website where you are able to check if a particular book is on the list: www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au
This website is helpful because as much as the library team try to put stickers on all the books, we do miss some. Also, if a book is from a shop, another library or home, you may need to check. The last four books on the student reading record are free choice books. They can even be take-home reading texts (readers). The students may also like to utilise our school’s e-platform for further reading and audio materials.
Once your child has completely filled out the reading record, including their 12 books, please return the reading record to your child’s class teacher.
Please call or email the school if you have any questions and I will be glad to give you additional information.

SAC News
Each semester, two students from each class in Reception to Year 5 are elected to represent their class at SAC. These students continue to demonstrate the characteristics of the IB Learner Profile.
Due to the high population of students, we have two SAC committees;
- EVEN STEVENS: Reception, Years 2 & 4 students meet during even weeks.
- ODD BODS: Years 1, 3 & 5 students meet during odd weeks.
- Each group is supported by some year 6 leaders.
We meet each fortnight and discuss issues brought up at class meetings, the students make any decisions that may need to be made on behalf of students, i.e., playground equipment and they also generate action based on the general wellbeing of our students.
The SAC is one example in our school of authentic student agency, i.e., students having the control and opportunity to make decisions for the benefit of their own and their peers learning and school experiences. Students in the SAC will be part of learning opportunities where they will;
- Question current behaviours, practices and procedures at LPPS.
- Explore data on the wellbeing of students.
- Take responsibility in communicating ideas and information to their classes and within the SAC.
- Make decisions based on data and feedback for the benefit of the school community.
- Action the decisions.
- Support their peers.
- Reflect on any action taken.
Stay tuned for the future reports from students about action they are implementing within our school.
Congratulations to the students listed below who have been elected SAC representatives of their classes.
Rachel Pontifex, Student Wellbeing Leader
Student Learning & Wellbeing Committee
Dear Parents
The Student Learning and Wellbeing Committee (SLWC) are looking for parent volunteers to join us.
The role of the SLWC is to work with the school leadership team in achieving the School's strategic plan around student learning and well-being improvement.
Volunteering is a great way to get involved to support your child's development and to voice your ideas about what we can do better.
The committee meets twice per term, usually the week before the Governing Council meetings to discuss and provide updates around activities and actions related to our goals of the year.
Our next meeting will be on the 23 March, 2023 at 6:30pm in the school staff room. If you would like to join the committee or to know what we are doing, you are more than welcome to attend the meeting or you can express your interest by emailing the School on dl.0647.info@schools.sa.edu.au with your contact details.
Best Regards,
John Wang, Chair, Student Learning and Well-being Committee
Harmony Day
As you all know Harmony Day is just around the corner. It is now appropriate to discuss about Harmony Day, and why we celebrate it. Harmony Day is when people are respectful of each other and their beliefs; and acknowledge the differences that make them unique. Harmony Day was first celebrated, and acknowledged in the year 1999. The people of Australia were encouraged to wear orange on Harmony Day, to show their support for all cultures. Orange also signifies freedom of ideas and mutual respect. We celebrate harmony day, aiming to foster inclusiveness, respect and the idea that people of all different cultures can make a valuable contribution to society. We would like to encourage students to wear traditional attire, which is on the 21 March, or they can choose to wear an orange t-shirt to school. Please ensure that your child brings a change of clothing in case of uncomfortable attire (e.g orange t-shirt and a pair of leggings or trousers).
Kind Regards,
Harshitha & Nishka (The Ambassador team of LPPS)
Interschool Chess: Years 3-6
Over the past fortnight, members of the Linden Park Primary Interschool Chess team have been attending grading sessions before school and during recess and lunch times in preparation for the SA Junior Chess League Competition in Terms 2 & 3.
Sessions were ran by David Koestiser from Chesslife, students participate in a development sessions and then put their skills to the test and competed against their peers. All students enjoyed the experienced and are ready for the season ahead.

Years 3 & 4 : Water Safety Program
As part of our Heath and Physical Education programme the Year 3 students attended Burnside Swimming Pool for their water safety lessons in week 5 and the Year 4 students attended in week 6. The students learnt survival strokes, how to call for help and how to safely put on a life vest in and out of the water. The week long session is a critical part to our learning. Thank you to all the parent volunteers that attended the swimming lessons with us.
Year 4: Cyber Safety
With the introduction of Chromebooks there is a need to educate students about Cyber Safety. A workshop on ‘Cyber and Internet Safety’ was organised for all Year 4 students. The session was run by Richard Rowland from ‘FYI Drug and Health Education’. Richard, a qualified teacher, is an Educational Entertainment Specialist committed to inspiring students to want to learn. All students had the opportunity to use Promethean Active Response Units.
The interactive workshop focused on: “I agree (Just click yes) – Cyber & Internet Safety”
- Social media contracts and the dangers of agreeing to them.
- Identify theft and the importance of strong, secure passwords
- Cyber Safety rules and being aware of posting photographs and comments on-line
- Cyber-bullying. What to do if it’s happening and the steps to prevent this.
Year 6 Camp
The Year 6 students attended a camp at Victor Harbor on 1 March - 3 March. The camp was an opportunity for the Year 6 cohort of students and their teachers to get to know each other. Students engaged in a program that focused on team building and the development of leadership skills through outdoor problem solving activities and water safety activities.
Year 2 Cricket
From: Simon Flint. Year 2 Coach ........
Thankfully the weather gods looked kindly on the Year 2 Linden Park cricket team on Saturday morning. Gone was the 40 degree weather, with much better playing conditions on offer. All seven cricketers arrived bright and early for the game which was great to see the whole team make it out together for the first time. We lined up against CBC for an exciting game of cricket, and what an exciting game it was, with plenty of wickets for both teams and plenty of runs as well. Some fine bowling from both sides, with the Linden Park team showing excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. We grabbed the win in a high scoring affair to make it 2 from 2 for the start of the season. This week sees us play Burnside, the game of the season.
Thanks so much for all the parents coming down to support and watch their children play, it's great to have them there!
