21 May Week 4 Term 2
Principal's Report
External Review
As part of our continuous school improvement process, we will be involved in an external school review with a Department for Education review panel. The purpose of the external school review is to support us to raise achievement, sustain high performance and provide quality assurance to build public confidence in government schools. All government schools are externally reviewed every three years. Linden Park Primary school's review will occur on the 21st-23rd of June.
The focus of the three day external review is to evaluate our school's performance and identify aspects for improvement. During the external review some students, parents, governing council members and staff are asked to provide information to the review panel via individual interviews, group discussions and visits to classrooms.
We appreciate everyone’s support and time in helping us with this external review process. A notice will be sent out shortly to parents if you do not want your child to participate in the review. If you would like more information, please email: dl.0647.info@schools.sa.edu.au
NAPLAN
Naplan tests have now been successfully completed by Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 students despite a few initial minor technical issues. This year’s tests, with the exception of the Year 3 writing, were all conducted online. The intuitive nature of the test meant they were tailored to the individual needs of the students based on the questions they answered correctly or incorrectly. This will enable us to obtain more detailed information about what each child knows and where they need additional support. The result will also be received earlier in the year so that we can use them to plan learning for each child. Thank you to Sheree Wingard for organising and overseeing the administation of Naplan.
Semester 1 2021 Reports
Staff are starting to write mid year student reports using a variety of assessments about student achievement to date. Our reports incorporate the elements of the Australian Curriculum as well as covering aspects of the IB Primary Years Program for Reception to Year 5 students. Mid Year reports will be published electronically through the Sentral parent portal and will be available to download by 4:00 pm on Wednesday 30th June. Login enquires can be directed to the front office.
Year 6 Camp
Although the weather was extremely challenging, our Year 6 cohort thoroughly enjoyed their recent leadership camp to Victor Harbour (10th-12th May 2021). Braving the artic conditions, students participated in body boarding, kayaking, beach games and many other problem solving activities. This is the first year that Year 6 have attended camp and it will become an annual feature going forward as Year 7 departs to high school in 2022.
A big thank you to our teachers who organised and attended camp on top of their normal duties and the volunteer parents who helped out with supervision.

Year 2 : The Olden Days
On Wednesday 12th May our Year 2 students participated in a re-enactment of an old fashioned school day as part of their Unit of Inquiry “Where we are in place and time." Students, teachers and leadership dressed up and began the day with a very stern morning assembly followed by some marching practice around the early year's yard and having their hands and fingernails inspected. On reflection, the students all preferred school in the 21st Century!
National Simultaneous Storytime
Wednesday this week was National Simultaneous Storytime. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 21st successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
This year the chosen book was "Give me some space!" by Philip Bunting. Students were able to share an intergalactic experience with the book being read by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station - picture below is Room 1 listening in.
Walk Safely to School Day
Due to Naplan testing and poor weather last Friday, we postponed our "WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY" to this morning, Friday 21st May. A fantastic turnout of students met at Miller Reserve at 8:30am and then they all walked down Hay road together to school.
Linden Park Primary School has participated in this annual event for the past five years. Walk Safely to School Day encourages all Primary school children to walk to school as a fantastic way to raise awareness about being healthy and active. It also helps to reduce congestion around the school and improves student understanding of road safety. For more information visit http://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/
Oliphant Science Awards
Linden Park Primary School has registered for The Oliphant Science Awards for any student interested in entering this competition.
This competition gives students an opportunity to develop their interest in science through a range of categories to suit a wide range of abilities and interests. ** Please note that entries are an extra-curricular activity and no school time will be allocated to work on them.
Parents should help guide their children in choosing a category which is suitable for their skill level and capability as the students need to be as independent with their entries as possible. Please carefully read each Category information page and the Conditions of Entry as there are specific rules and assessments required - Click here

NETBALL
The LPPS Yr 2/3 Netta Maroon Netball team - consisting of first-time players from grades 2 and 3- have had a great start to their first season of netball. The team had a bye for their first week so were a little behind on match practice when they took to the court for week 2 against Rose Park Primary. The first game included a few offside players, being ‘polite’ when two people were going for the ball and some stepping with the ball. There were a lot of questions about where each player could go and reminders from parents on the side lines. Unfortunately after a valiant effort, Rose Park were a better team on the day. However, after another week of training and some match practice under their belt, the Netta maroon team showed much progress for week 3. There were more players staying in their positions, on-target shots, and more consistent defending of opposition players. The team were rewarded for their efforts with their first win!
Thank you to the parent coach, Lucy Bedford, for introducing a very ‘green’ team to netball. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings!
ORIENTEERING

SOCCER
A great start to the season for the Yr 5 Mighty Golds Soccer team! Wave after wave of attacks saw Massi, Nandan and Mateo go agonisingly close. Liam hit the crossbar. We finally scored thanks to Van and a stunning hat trick from Ashley. Zak made some great tackles as did Ben who did an audacious back heel that looked like a fluke. Then he did it again so it may not have been! Seth was brilliant in goal to keep a deserved clean sheet. Go The Golds! Coach: Chris Morrison
Final Score: Linden Park Gold -4 : St Joseph’s Norwood -0
Food Allergy Week 23-29 May
We have staff and students at our school who have a variety of allergies, nuts being the most prevalent and although we can not completely remove all allergens, we aim to make our school a safe environment for all. Parents are requested NOT to send food to school that contain nuts, especially peanuts. This includes products such as peanut paste, ‘Nutella’, whole nuts, products cooked in peanut oil and other foods that may contain nuts. We also request that you do not bring sweets or treats to share with other students.
What is Food Allergy Week ?
Food Allergy Week runs from 23-29 May and is an important annual initiative of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia that aims to raise awareness about food allergy in Australia, to help reduce the risk of a reaction for those living with food allergy and to help manage potentially life-threatening emergencies when they happen.
At Linden Park Primary we have an Allergy Awareness Policy which states:
- Parents are requested NOT to send food to school that contain nuts, especially peanuts. This includes products such as peanut paste, ‘Nutella’, most nuts, peanut cooking oil and other foods that may contain nuts.
- Students are encouraged to wash hands before and after eating. Students who bring food containing nuts, or nut products, are required to eat that food in the front office and to wash their hands before going to play and must not to share food.
- Staff will be made aware of students who have anaphylactic responses, including nut allergy and will supervise students during lunch eating time and will be vigilant in regard to this policy. Staff will regularly undertake first aid training.
The LPPS policy can be viewed on our website here
