Kaurna acknowledgement
Niina Marni. As we feel the earth beneath us, the wind around us and the sun above us, we acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of this land. We pay our respects to past Elders and will work with present and emerging Elders to protect and care for this unique land of ours. We also extend this respect to other First Nations peoples.
Principal's report
Welcome to Term 2
Term 2 is well underway with classes engaged in new Units of Inquiry, with ‘Sharing the planet’, ‘How the world works’ and ‘How we express ourselves’ as key Transdisciplinary themes across the school.
Our enrolments portal for Receptions in 2024 has opened and planning is beginning to manage the enrolment process with two scheduled intakes. Reception Tours, led by our Year 6 Ambassadors begin on May 24th 2023 to showcase our school.
We also have a two-day Student Free Professional Learning event from 24th & 25th of May 2023, with international facilitators leading staff as they refine and improve our PYP Transdisciplinary themes.
Acknowledging Enzo – 30 Years strong at LPPS
In a world that is constantly changing, at LPPS we have the good fortune of having Enzo Bria to provide us with stability and consistency. Enzo has seen generations of children; countless staff and leaders come and go, all whilst remaining steadfast.
Enzo has just chalked up his 30th anniversary as groundsman and chicken wrangler; he not only delivers manicured lawns but is fluent in speaking ‘chicken’, coaxing his brood to lay eggs.
There are few in our school community that don’t have an Enzo story, so we thank Enzo and keep our fingers crossed that he keeps our school running for many more years to come!
Investigations in Room 6
In line with our PYP philosophy, fostering our children’s curiousity and ability to work collaboratively is being developed in Reception and some Year 1 classes through Investigations. The Investigations approach to learning provides children with opportunities to explore keyconcepts using a hands-on approach. The concepts are linked to the Units of Inquiry and formally captured through children’s design and reflections.
Sophie and Ari have shared their reflection after running a hairdressing salon.
"Today in Investigations, we did our Principal's hair in our Room 6 pop up salon. Fiona made an appointment for 9:30am. She called as she was running late because there was a traffic jam. First, we had to wash her hair, then we had to dry and straighten. We coloured her hair to cover her grey bits. We tied her hair up and she looked good. For real, we actually got to tie her hair up! It was good to have a real customer and we enjoyed it. We love having the hairdressing salon because there are so many things to use and we can mix the colours up, choose the colours from the colour board, we can straighten hair, blow dry and brush it. We are not allowed to use any scissors but we can pretend by using our fingers. We have called it the 'Great Salon' because it makes people look great. Thank you for coming Fiona." Staffing news
Dear Linden Park Primary School community,
Throughout Term 2, I am thrilled to carry on the work of Rachel Pontifex as Acting Student Wellbeing Leader. I will be available Monday–Thursday, with Rachel continuing her role as Autism Lead Teacher on Fridays. I will continue to teach in Room 26 on Fridays, collaborating with Petrea Smith.
I am passionate about working proactively with children to promote a positive sense of self, their relationships and experiences at school.
Rachel and I will focus on further reinforcing anti-bullying strategies and children’s understanding of bystanders.
I look forward to supporting the children, families and broader Linden Park Primary School community.
Kind regards, Jane Angove
Autism awareness month
Supporting students with Autism
During the first weeks in term 2, our teachers and SSOs will be acknowledging Autism Awareness Month with all students. Although Autism Awareness Month is traditionally acknowledged during April, we thought recognising and celebrating our differences at the beginning of the term may be another way to build a sense of belonging at Linden Park Primary School for our students.
Part of my role as the Autism Inclusion Teacher is to support our educators (teachers and SSO’s), consult with parents and to make accommodations to meet the functional support needs of neuro-divergent students at Linden Park Primary School. I have had specific training using an online planning tool via Positive Partnerships, a national project funded by the Australian Government Department for Education.
When discussing the support needs we explore:-
- Strengths and interests of the child.
- Connections to culture and community.
- Social and communication skills.
- Sensory processing.
- Self-care and independence skills.
- Executive functioning skills.
I hope to add some student reflections of learning to the display in our front office during the beginning of term 2. Our students will be discussing and learning about;
- We all have different talents, skills, and difficulties that make us all unique.
- People with Autism won’t behave, think, feel or process information the same way as other people without Autism.
- What is sensory overload?
- Famous people who have Autism.
- Different ways of communicating.
- A range of ways to interact with others using flexible thinking strategies.
- Managing changes in routines.
The Positive Partnerships site is a fantastic resource to find out about online workshops for parents and family members, resources and professional learning about Autism. https://www.positivepartnerships.com.au/
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like further information about support provided at Linden Park Primary School.

Library news
The 'Margret Gatley' Library has undergone a transformation during the April school holidays. The circulation desk was removed and a new circulation desk installed. Alongside the entranceway a new bookcase was built into the window frame.
This bookcase allows books and students' work to be displayed to the passing students. Greater independence for the students has been organised through extra shelving (where the students can access their own book holds and reservations) and bookcases.
Future developments will see the library being internally painted and new carpeting occurring.
Russell Hanson, Teacher Librarian
National Walk Safely to School Day
Linden Park Primary School has participated in the National Walk Safely to School Day for the last six years! This year, the event will be held on Friday, 19 May (Week 3).
National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
For more information, please visit: https://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/
Students wishing to participate are asked to meet on the carpark side of Miller Reserve, Linden Park, at 8:30am sharp. There is parking behind the Linden Park Grocer on Devereux Road. The Linden Park Grocer is our lunch order supplier and they make an exceptional coffee if you wish to get there 5 minutes earlier! We will leave Miller Reserve at 8:35am and walk to school together.
Participating students will need a parent to supervise them throughout the walk.
If you are unable to participate in this event, it would be fantastic to take the initiative to park a little bit further from school than normal to promote safer, greener and more active travel for primary school students and their communities.
Rachel Pontifex & Jane Angove, Student Wellbeing Leaders
Auskick Visit
On Friday, 5 May (week 1), Linden Park Primary had a visit from the SANFL to receive an Auskick clinic for classes in Reception – Year 2. Classes were brought out to the oval for a 30 minute session with their teachers to practise their football skills such as kicking, marking and handballing. It was great to see so many kids enjoy kicking a footy with their friends.

School Sport SA - Year 5/6 Statewide Knockout Cricket Competition
On Wednesday, 12 April, Linden Park Primary hosted Trinity Gardens Primary and St Francis de Sales College in the first round match of the Statewide Schools Knockout Cricket Competition at Mariner Oval.
On a drizzly morning with plenty of rain the night before, the Year 5/6 Knockout team were ready to take on their rivals, Trinity Gardens Primary in the first match of the day with the winner playing St Francis de Sales later in the afternoon. Co-Captains, Kyle F and Rohan D won the bat flip and elected to field to first.
Kyle F opened the bowling and could not have gotten off to a better start, taking a wicket with the very first delivery of the match. The great bowling continued with Joshua S-J taking a wicket the very next over with a beautiful in-swinging Yorker knocking over the stumps. Joshua S-J was on fire as he finished with four wickets and was on a Hat-trick at one stage after his two overs. The great bowling by the openers had Trinity Gardens on the back foot in the early stages of the match.
Some costly wides and no balls gave Trinity Gardens some free runs and two of their batsmen put on a nice partnership to give them some confidence. Billy R was doing a great job as Wicket Keeper in the first 10 overs but it was time for him to come in the bowling attack. What a fantastic change it was as Billy R came in and with some great line and length bowling, he took five wickets. It was a great bowling innings from the host side as they bowled Trinity Gardens out for 60 runs.
LPPS needed 61 to win and openers Vinuk W and Joshua S-J had a tough job facing the first few overs of the match in overcast conditions. Unfortunately, Trinity Gardens struck early in the first over with a beautiful in-swinging Yorker knocking over the stumps. A few similar dismissals in the second over of the day had Linden Park 3 down for not many and the pressure was right on the Linden Park team. Kyle F came to the crease and was able to put on a courageous partnership with Kiaan P to steady the ship. It was a very tight and exciting game of cricket for the spectators with neither team looking like losing. As we looked to get on top, Trinity Gardens would gain some momentum and it all came down to the last two overs. Oscar Butler came in and provided some really valuable runs. Unfortunately he copped a nasty deliver and needed to retire hurt which brought the partnership of Ali H and Thomas D to the crease. The boys needed 4 runs off the last over to win the match and the boys were right up for the challenge. With some courageous shots and some great running between the wickets, the boys got the job done with 2 balls to spare. A very inspiring victory for Linden Park Primary and the team was ecstatic.
Linden Park progressed to the next match against St Franics de Sales College. A mirror image from the first bat flip, Linden Park won and elected to bowl first. There was tremendous fielding on display with three incredible run outs to get the team off to a hot start. Aarsh S and Ali H came into bowl and worked fantastically in tandem, both attacking the stumps with pace and getting rewarded. Billy R continued his beautiful bowling display from the first match and taking another 3 wickets. Oscar B came into the attack and hit all the right areas with his leg spin.
After 11 overs, St Francis De Sales were bowled out for 37 runs. Linden Park knew the job was not over and needed to put in a good performance with the bat to chase down the score. Kyle F and Rohan D batted beautifully, with some valuable runs coming from Blake M and Neil I, in the later stages of the match to get the team over the line.
Linden Park Primary finished the day with two wins from two matches with each player contributing to the results. The team has progressed to the second round of the competition which will be played in Term 4.

Term One: Casual Day
By: SAC (Odd Bods & Even Stevens).... Thank you to all of our families who donated a gold coin at the end of Term 1 for our casual day. The money collected will go towards resources for two ‘quiet spaces’ within the school. Because of your generous donations, we managed to raise $879.90.
The money raised may go towards, soft furnishings, quiet games, alternative lighting, sensory toys or consumables and of course tubs to store the equipment.
The SAC and some educators have been discussing setting up two ‘quiet spaces’ for students to go to during recess and lunch if they prefer a calm and quiet space to read, play a quiet game or just re-charge for more learning.
More information on our quiet spaces soon! Thank you

Year 1 Science incursion: Tuesday, 2 May
As part of our unit of inquiry 'How the World Works', our Year 1 students were involved in a hands on science incursion, 'Simple Machines Push! Pull! Workshop' delivered by Sciworld. Students were introduced to the six simple machines: the lever, wedge, screw, inclined plane, wheel and pulley. By learning how these simple machines are used every day to make our lives easier, students discovered that they are the basic building blocks for all other machines. The workshop introduced the concept of forces and shows how machines enable us to do work more easily.
Room 16: Year 3
In room 16, for our inquiry lesson we incorporated art and maths. We have previously learnt about the states of matter and how they can change based on heat energy. We have learnt about reversible and irreversible change.
This learning experience included oil pastels. The pastels were in small pieces and put onto a shape. We then melted the pastels using an iron into a liquid. Once the pastel hardened, the pastel became solid again which helped create some great patterns!
Claudia McEntee, Teacher (Room 16)
Year 4
The Year 4s have been inquiring into how our choices impact the environment and society. More specifically, we have been learning about global warming and how greenhouse gases impact temperatures around the Earth.
Lucas from Room 25 has created a poster to share his learning so far.
Lesley Kong, Teacher (Room 25)
Mother's Day stall
The Community & Fundraising Committee organised a Mother's Day Stall on Thursday, 11 May.

Year 6-7 2024: Registration of Interest
Dear Parents/Caregivers (Year 6 students)
Each year the Department for Education coordinates a state-wide process to assist primary school students’ transition to secondary school. A new online registration of interest form is now available for parents of students starting secondary school in 2024 to complete. You should have received an email last week with a link to complete your child's registration of interest.
It is recommended that you use Chrome as your internet browser to complete this form. The form can be accessed from a computer, tablet or mobile phone, as long as you can connect to the internet, and replaces the old paper format used by schools. The online form will allow you to tell the department if:
- You would like your child to attend their local/zoned secondary school.
- You are interested in your child attending another SA government secondary school.
- Your child does not require a place, as they will not be attending a SA government secondary school in 2024.
Important: The online form must be submitted by Friday, 26 May 2023.
It is important that parents/guardians reach an agreement regarding which secondary school you want to nominate for your child before you complete the form, as only one form can be submitted for each child. If you need to make changes after the form has been submitted, you will need to contact us.
All families will be advised of their child’s secondary school allocation on or by Friday, 11 August 2023.
If you are not able to access the online form, or if you need help or have questions about how to complete it, please contact Debbie Kennett Debbie.kennett231@schools.sa.edu.au
